I'm not familiar with the LT1, but when my 1st gen had backfire issues it was related to the HEI. I'd look at the optispark and ignition timing...............____ .......

Check the plug, heck just replace it. Check the rest of the wires. The best way is to look at them at night while its runing. So now just to clarify. Is it a mis or a backfire,? Also check the firing order, make sure the wires are correct and fully seated.Last edited by zeeman; May 1st, 2015, 08:22 AM.

This is one of the biggest problems with the Opti system. Its buried under the water pump. And the computer controls the timing. without a bunch of electronic test equipment, its a bear to diagnose. Even to change the cap, you have to remove the water pump.Originally posted by mikewoods View PostI'm not familiar with the LT1, but when my 1st gen had backfire issues it was related to the HEI. sounds like you still have some wires melted in that cable, follow the cable all the way back. What was the wire/cable going to that melted?sigpic

Plugs and wires and plugs and wires!!!
LT1s are very fussy when it comes to plugs and wires. Do not run a larger gauge wire than stock and run a factory heat range plug gapped on the conservative side. (Big wires, big gap = more resistance which the opti hates).
I personally use nothing but AC delco wires and NGK TR6 plugs (use TR55s on a stock engine). Check the gap on them and if anything go narrower than the factory setting. I dont think its coincidence this problem started after you burned a wire. What kind of headers did you get if you dont mind me asking?-Joel

One of my plug wires would always end up resting on one of my headers and then would arc to the header. I got those Kevlar cover things and those helped but still burned through on of those... I eventually just upgraded to more bendable wires.. But in the process of all of that I think one of my o2s went bad. Once I fixed that, it ran fine.sigpic

I have my wires in the stock location, but the stock looms are removed and the wires are held in place with zip ties. Works perfect ive never burned a wire. But some headers dont have enough room to do this (why i asked which ones he had).-Joel

Plenty of room for wires in the stock location with pacesetters! Use zip ties liberally!
Plug gap on the tr55s should be about .045Last edited by JoeliusZ28; May 1st, 2015, 11:45 AM.-Joel
