  • Anybody know what this is???

So I have been away/lurking for a while and have not posted at all recently. My apologies.

But any who, I have been having intermittent issues with my 2005 grand Prix not starting. I will turn the key and my DIC says "Starting disabled due to theft system". And the DIC displays "service theft system" whenever it does start.

I read to change the anti theft module, which apparently is a plastic relay/ring piece that goes around the keyhole and reads to make sure it is the right key.

During my ignition tear down, I came across this:

    20150209_173327.jpg

I scoured the internet and can't figure out what it is. Has a red light and a green light on the end and is blank on the backside. It was wound up in duct tape in the harness. A few of the wires are wired into the ignition. I know it is not the BCM.

I guess it is the fear of the unknown that is driving me crazy. 😟

Anybody have any idea what it is? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million!

That looks like a remote start bypass.

        Thank you, gentlemen

Well that it very interesting... Being a fleet car and having no RPO code for remote start, I didn't even think of that. My car did not come with key fobs when I bought it.

Where do the wires lead? I have installed probably 200 remote starts in the past 4 months and that doesn't look like anything I've ever touched. With those grad prixs they require I bypass interface that uses your spare key... Could be some form of interface for your radio, but it still doesn't look right. Looks more like some of the GPS tracking systems that i've installed. But if its 10 years old it could be past what I know. Or I guess a factory remote start..... duh.... that too lol

Well it's not a factory module. Looks aftermarket to me, I'd guess that it's what the other guys have been saying, GPS/passlock bypass/remote starter. If unplug it and or remove the wires to it, because if its a passlock bypass, that's where you theft issue might be. Ideally you'd want to get the codes read to see what's going on with passlock though.

If it's soldered into the wires connecting to your passlock module (orange yellow and black) then it'll be for a remote start. The remaining connections will be a simple D2D plug on the remote start brain. Find that brain, pull a model number, order some keyfobs off amazon, and you're in business! My friend bought a used car 2 weeks ago and I got the remote start working for him. From the valet switch alone you can delete previously programmed fobs (highly recommend doing) and add on new ones!

The little red / green LED indicates flashes for programming in between VATS, Passlock 1, Passlock 2... etc. It should also have a small port on it to connect to a computer to flash upgraded firmware.

So... I know the suspense is killing everyone.

I went out on break at work and looked at the wiring. Further up under the dash it is spliced in. I guess I would have maybe seen that if i did my original investigation in better daylight than an apartment complex parking lot at night .

So I grasped at straws and searched the FCC ID on the sticker and got a hit.

Here is what came up: http://services.koretelematics.com/d...viceTypeID=574

Looks to be an aftermarket GPS tracking unit. I am guessing it was used when my GP was a fleet car?

Thank you everyone for helping diagnose this mystery object. I am bummed it is not a remote start unit, but relieved to know what the device is now.

                  Have a happy Tuesday!

told you, mom and pop car dealers use them incase they have a buyer skip out on a payment, makes repo'ing so much easier. Or a noise boss wants to keep tabs on an employee specially when they are using a company car, company gas and company time, etc
