Joel the real funny thing is the service manual calls for 1- 11/2 turns! No way the valves would even close.
I didn't hear to much lifter noise, and I would trade a little noise for a smooth running engine if that's what it takes. As long as they aren't hammering when cold. I HATE cold lifter clatter, and my other car is a Jeep 6cyl.Last edited by zeeman; April 22nd, 2014, 02:38 PM.

service manual is for stock rockers, your car is cammed.
Also, as far as i know the adjustment on the TB is meant to be used only in "get me by" situations, it should be in the full closed position if everything is in proper working order.-Joel

"used cam with new lifters". Thought that meant you changed it. The rockers probably make the biggest difference.-Joel

Joel, ah gotcha.
Ok, new iac and loaner icm are installed. I recleaned the tb, and did a proper tb bypass. Its running seems to hold an idle. I'm going to put the laptop on it tomorrow. And maybe take it for a drive.
Lifters were a bit loud on start up, Ill give em some time to aclimate.
Sounds a lot smoother. We'll see....

ok, I lied. Like I would have been able to sleep not knowing....
I waited until the car was in closed loop, 183 degrees, the iac was set for 16 minimum position. It was at 13 when I shut it off. the difference this time is the idle set point was at 675. it was at 575 with the other iac and icm. It does go to 575 in gear. I am starting to think that the other iac was bad.
But, I am going to stick to the plan.
step 1 , drive it as it is now , with borrowed icm. if it goes well for a week or 2, then , step 2, I will switch back to my icm. and see how that goes. If the symptoms return then I will either switch back to the loaner or just buy a new icm and see if that fixes it . if not then....... drop 10 and punt?.....
I am at some point going to reset the rocker arms. What I did yesterday made an immense difference in the way it runs. I was way to rushed to do a proper job of setting them yesterday , with the iac, and the fire. Now that the idle is correct , it should be way easier to set them and get it right this time.
I did some reading today and I'll be darned if shoeboxes sight didnt hit it right on the head with 1/4 turn past zero lash for running method. I used his recommended methods for doing it static, but, not for running. live and learn.

Mine are lashed to 1/3 past 0 with the static method. (that was after trying several other settings). Each car is different though... I also have a bigger cam with steeper ram rates. IMO if it doesn't take a couple tries to find the best setting you probably didnt put enough care into it
Seems like youre on the right track.

No new cam. The cam that is in the motor is the used cam compared to the new lifters. I have a miss that I can't get a handle on. Today I backed the lifters off to 1/8 of a turn. It seems to be better. And the lifters are quiet so far. Haven't started it cold at this setting yet either though.
Yeah that iac was some bizarre shiz. The stock one died. Then the replacement died. This one is ok so far. It did act up once but has been great since.
