Alternator questions

Trying to find a cheaper route to go since we just dropped a ton of coin on parts.

Engine is a 99 5.3l, just installed LS3/L99 Camaro power steering pump and alternator bracket. The truck alternator has a shorter distance between the bolt holes than what is required by the LS3/L99 bracket.

Anyone know if I could replace the front housing with one that has the correct spacing? This would save me from buying a $150 alternator and having to install a new connector on the harness. And if it is possible, not even sure where to start looking for a front housing.

The cheapest I have found is $125 for a new alternator with a broken housing for the connector. I'll go in the garage and measure the distance from bolt center to bolt center.

Not a lot of room with this setup. Looks like it will just shy of 1/8" from the Delphi 600 power steering box if this actually works

Hmm... What about giving National quick Start Sales a call? They might be able to tell you about swapping housings.

I'll try to dig out information tomorrow on the size of the alternator housing. I'm pretty sure it's a different size and it's not a swap and go.
Do you have photos?

Never heard of National Quick Start Sales, but they are about 15 minutes away from me.

The alternator I have is out of an early 2000's Silverado. I guess if the housing dimensions aren't the same, I'll buy an alternator and change out the connector. ACDelco was no help when I called them.

Is there a local junkyard? They should have a Hollanders Exchange manual that will list what will work in plcace of the Camaro alternator. You can probably find one at the yard that will work. They aren't hard to rebuild if that needs to be done.

Yup, checked Weller and LKQ. Neither had any in stock but could get them. I forget what they wanted for it, but core price made it almost as expensive as buying a new AC Delco from Amazon or ebay. I just figured I'd ask around before dropping $150

You should be able to use the truck alt as a core.

I'd rather keep it, building a 5.3 for my uncle and might need it. If it doesn't get used, it will be a backup for my 98 Z or the 02 Silverado.
