  • I give up....Cant figure out starting issue

Guys, Please help! IM LOST. last summer I had different issues with my ignition, the key stuck, the car dosent start correctly etc etc.
So, I took the column apart, tightened up the bolts that were (so i thought) making it "wobbily" didnt seem to help. I cut the VATS wires from the key cylinder and used resistors to bypass the VATS. I slightly adjusted the ignition switch on the column. the car still does not start as it should. the car will just crank and crank, turn the key to "off" and back to "on" wait for dash lights to go out after pump primes, crank crank crank...it will do this any number of times and sometimes, after any number of attempts, it will start, sometimes when it starts, it runs fine, once in a while it will act as though it is running on half the cylinders, when i does that, i shut it off and try to fire it up again, go thru the cranking again and it will eventually start and run fine again. I am completely baffled. Im ready to unload this thing and buy another darn motorcycle. and i really dont want to. i love this car but here it is july and i havent drove the car once. where do I start? what do I look for? PLEASE!!! HELLLPP!!!

Have you checked to see that you have good spark?

Ok, does it crank normal speed or is it sluggish ? I would make sure the battery terminals are clean and tight before adjusted anything else. Next check your throttle position sensor. Have you ever replaced your fuel filter ?

Also to add, check your fuel pressure after the pump primes. should be between 42-47 if i recall correctly.

I have not check any of those things yet that is next on my list of to dos. As for the cranking. ...it cranks normal. Battery terminals are spotless. Ill check FP and spark and go from there. If FP is good and I have good spark. .. them what?

id start with the things suggested. its easy to check them too. also if you can get the car running. test the fuel pressure while its running, take it for a drive if you can just to really make sure your pressure is good. you'll probably have to tape it to your windshield. let us know how it goes.

Bypassed the resistor in the key

This is going to sound stupid but i just got up north to my cottage and this morning i went to start my car and it wouldn't start. Then i remembered my air filter was due to be cleaned. so i took it off car fired right up. I had a lot of those floating white cotton in it. my car would strong crank but no start. so another easy thing to look at.

As for driving. Once it does start. It drives ok. It has however, since I bought it. . Fall on its nose and buck and snort up towards redline. But normal driving Conditions it seems ok.
I'll check FP and spark so I can either rule those two out our not

I would Check those 2 things (fp and make sure you have spark) like everyone else has said... At least you can rule out those major 2 things.. prime it it should have around 37ish to 40ish... You say it likes to fall on its face when it gets higher up in the rpm, could be a dying fuel pump also could be other things unforunately lol, easy way to check If you can get the car started, put a mechanical gauge on it and drive around with the gauge taped to the windshield or if you have enough cord put it in the car, at idle it should be around 37 to 40, at WOT it should be 43.5... Obviously if the car doesn't have spark you are going to have to start diagnosing your ignition system.

Here is a great website if you already didn't know about it to diagnose alot of problems http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech1.html

Sounds like a ground issue to me.

I bought this and it solved my VATS issues:

You can also have it tuned out.

I've never seen a GM fuel pump behave intermittently. They either work..... or they don't. But I'll check.
I've had to repair several wires under the dash that were chopped up from a remote start that had been removed. I did just have two wires to the transmission Fixed just before last fall that got tore loose some how it IS entirely possible a ground wire got damaged. Is there any ground wires in that area? This problem didn't start until after I had those wires fixed
