  • need help asap, car won't start

went out to my car at work to get lunch and i was welcomed with a car that doesn't start. battery is not dead and all accessories turn on. security light also goes off so I know that it is not a problem with the chip in the key. i do not hear the starter clicking when i turn the ignition to start the car. tried jumping the car thinking that the battery was low enough that it might affect the starter, but i get the same results of the engine not turning over and not hearing anything from the starter. any suggestions would be appreciated. i also check and verified that the battery has a green dot in the plastic window.

Starter solenoid is toast. If you know where the starter is, have someone hold the key to the start position, while you get under there and hit the starter with a hammer. This might work as a temporary fix to get it to fire, but don't try doing this too many times. Let me know if it works.

Have someone tap on the starter while you try to start it. I'm betting starter died.

Yea those guys are correct, it might just be frozen where its not firing so if you tap it hard enough while trying to start the car it may work but sounds like you'll need to replace it.

i have not completely ruled out a security issue. we just went out and tried the tap trick with no luck. the minor clicking noise that I am hearing we verified is coming from the relay in the front of the two relay/fuse boxes.

I will get my spare key later tonight from my house and come back to see if that might do the trick.

                  cpp switch or starter relay.
starter relay is pretty common on ls1's

If its clicking like that I highly doubt it security, usually if its security it wont crank, and the security light will stay on.

well i brought my spare key to work today and on the third try it fired up. i did notice that all the needles spiked and dropped back to the appropriate levels/positions. also the trip odometer was reset to zero. any ideas. I am think a loose ground or power wire somewhere. I also forgot to mention that i do have a aftermarket remote start alarm on the car but was installed a while back and until this point has not caused any issues. thanks for all the help and input so far.

weird that your trip odometer reset. I would still say that it could potentially be starter solenoid, they will go sometimes if you cycle them like that. My old firebird used to do that before I replaced it.

Trip meter will reset to 0 if it loses juice (like if it's unplugged or the battery is disconnected). I remember you said you tried to jump it and what not, if you disconnected the battery at any point that's why it reset. If you didn't disconnect the battery, my guess would be that you had a couple things going on - battery dead from the cold or something of the sort, when you jumped it you recharged it, but because of the cold it didn't have the oomph to crank (they always say getting a battery to start when it's really cold is hard). Unfortunate part is that it's now warmer so the problem very well could have been cold/temperature related.

Thats good that you got it to work, the dip shit before me Cut some wires under the dash to disable my Security problem, the light stays on and my remote doesnt work, except for when it wants to, kinda like how women are sometimes nice I'm gonna get yelled at for that.

Anyways I cannot find what he effed up even when i had my motor out theres nothing cut, must be under the dash, and when i leave the key in the ignition and open the drivers door the lights go on and the car dings, but when i try the passenger side the lights go on but no dinging....

I'm puzzled and GM needs to get there shit together before they actually do Close down for good. and hacks need to stay in there ghetto cars and quit screwing up nice cars.

^^ I think everything is normal on your car. My remote decides not to work sometimes as well. I don't know about the passenger door and the chimer, I'll check that out next time I get a chance.
