  • Passenger Window Issues

Figured I'd post a thread about this to see what everyone thinks, not looking forward to tearing apart my door again.

As some of you know, Saturday (August 30th) I took both of my doors apart and replaced BOTH window motors. I used the writeup from Shbox and it went really smooth. Only took about 30 minutes for each door. Ended up knocking out a few other things (power mirror harness conversion from the Camaro wiring to the Firebird wiring) and then put it all back together.

The driver's side was replaced with a brand new window motor from Murrays that I purchased the day before.

The passenger's side was replaced with an unopened OEM GM window motor that my dad bought a couple years ago from the dealership.

After I finished installing the motor, and after I finished installing the door panels I did a few tests up and down with each window to ensure the gears were meshed.

Didn't drive the car at all on Sunday or Monday. Tuesday I drove it to work, had the windows down on the way to work, rolled them up when I got to work. Went to lunch in the Camaro and rolled the windows on the drive to the restaurant, rolled them up when my boss and I got there. Left the restaurant, went to roll the windows down, and SONOFA***** the passenger side window was completely froze.

I've metered the switches, they get power and are working 100% perfectly. Even tried the old Camaro switches instead of the Firebird switches, passenger side won't budge at all. If you put your head to the door panel while pushing on the switch, right when you make the connection on the switch you can hear like a click that reminds me of a relay click but it's a lot softer and I don't think there's any relays in the motor.

Anyone have any ideas other than the motor being fried already? I just can't believe the motor only lasted through about 10 uses (up and down) once it was installed.

You should check to see if it's binding on anything, there are all sorts of things in there that could get jammed. Make sure you don't have any wires hanging and that the glass is free to move. I had a little bit of plastic stuck in the regulator, and it made similar noises.

Did you replace the window regulators when you put new motors in? Check to make sure your window regulator is good.

if that wasnt good wouldnt the whole window drop down? The wire on mine broke and the whole window dropped to the bottom of the door. (in my DD)

If it broke it could've jammed, so I can see the thought process of it being the regulator. I guess I'll have to tear the door apart again to find out this weekend.

never just buy the motors on f-bodys... i dont know how many of these darn things i change at work...

always get a regulator, it will solve tons of problems, and always get oem gm, aftermarket motors seem to blow... just in my own experiences in more then just fbodys..

sounds like (if u just changed the motor) maybe it came loose and the teeth are misaligned.

                  maybe it came unplugged

maybe it is bound up on the regulator track.. make sure everything is aligned correctly otherwise the window will jerk and make noise, etc.

very few cars use a wire style regulator... alot of cryslars have them..

gm has a 3 wheel setup usually, 2 on the window and 1 on the door side. if the wheels come out of the track youll be lucky if it moves, but they wear out quick especially if you dont have the upper stoppers adjusted right

Turns out the motor was completely... completely... fried. Took it out and it still wouldn't turn so I ran to Murrays (literally .1 of a mile outside of my neighborhood) and bought a new one. Fixed and works great.

The passenger side that fried was e-bay. Not sure if it was OEM or aftermarket, but it sucked I'm stickin' to getting brand new ones from the auto stores or dealerships where you at least know what you're getting and they come with lifetime warranties.
