    Have you looked into the cost of getting a custom ground cam? Would probably cost you $100 more but you'd know it would be (near) perfectly spec'd for your setup. Well worth it for a stout build IMO.

      I'd go less duration on the cam.

        not really, I've known it was an option, I just came across these cam kits which seem to have most everything needed, but it is something I will definitely consider. thanks!

        I don't claim to be a pro with this stuff, but from what I was reading that cam is a pretty good fit for a healthy 383, any reason in particular you would change to a cam with less duration? just trying to learn as much as possible. thanks!

          I too like less rather than more duration when possible. Won't have to rev as high, will have awesome torque and less surging which will in turn make it more fun to street drive.

            That cam will peak somewhere around 6000 rpm. Keep in mind that if you do go EFI this will effect your cam selection.

              And get a set of GM 12499225 lifters, get them on ebay for $90 or so.

                  also any recommendations on valve springs that are also economical in price? I've read the LS6 valve springs might be worth looking into, but again.. don't know how well they would do with a semi aggressive camshaft?

                    People run them in 600+ hp engines all the time, as far as I know GM runs these in all of their engines to this day. There are a couple different suppliers, some better than others but I can't remember which. I used to make them when I was at Delphi.

                    LS6 spring is a bit on the weaker side, low spring rate. The LS9 springs are a bit better but I'm not sure if they will fit on a SBC head with the proper installed height. I used a Lunati 74818K5 spring kit

                      I would use lunati/Morel lifters. GM ls7 lifters have been real crappy lately

                        Without firsthand experience I'd take the few negative reviews with a grain of salt, there are some sellers trying to pass off cheap lifters as GM parts.

                          I have to add that a good majority of the failures were due to improper pushrod length, pushrod length is crucial when it comes to genIII+ engines as they are pedestal mount unlike their older counterparts.

                            I'm not gonna lie, valve train design is my least favorite part of building an engine ...

                            Sub'd. I have a 383 stoker I wanna build too.

                              I would start by calling the tech support from multiple cam manufacturers. See what they recommend. And compare multiple manufacturers. That's what they are there for. And many of them are very knowledgeable.
