  • Fuel additive(storage)

I'm about to put my summer driver away for the winter and have never stored a car for the winter.
What is best to put in the fuel tank for storage. Stabil or sea foam?
    Or maybe something else?

I don't use anything, just fill it all the way up and park it. I've heard with modern motors/fuel it's not necessary.

I never use anything either. I start it up about once a month and let it run for 10-15 minutes, and if there's a "nice" day out where the snow has gone away, I might go take it out for a spin around the block, too.

I use StaBil in my yard equipment and smaller gas engines. But I've never bothered with it for the cars/trucks.

StaBil has one that is supposed to help protect the exposed (above fluid level) parts of a steel tank (if your vehicles have steel tanks). I looked for it last year, but could not find it locally. If I could, I'd throw some of that in. Can't hurt.

It's a 98 so it does have a metal fuel tank

Do you hook up a battery tender or pull the battery?

I run mine on a tender. Easy to start on occasion during the winter too. Just unplug it and fire it up.

Today's fuel(E10) is garbage and the shelf life is very short.
I like to put my cars away on E and in the spring drive straight to the gas station to fill it up with fresh stuff.

I do not recommend letting the car idle either. Cars make very little horsepower at idle not being under load.
Remember getting the oil up to temperature takes much longer than the cooling system.

If you want to charge the battery buy a charger.
If you want to run to lube the seals and such... take it for a 10-15 mile drive.

I normally fill the tank, and use some stabil, this year I am going empty as I will be tuning first thing this spring.

I agree with Brian, fuel is garbage these days, and degrades heavily over the few months of storage. I have a noticeable power loss from my first tank of the year to the second.

Same with the idling, the oil needs to to get hot enough to boil out the water it gathers from cold starts, its not going to do that idling for 15 minutes.

I disconnect the battery, and let it sit until spring. Unless I want to start it to hear the exhaust.

So putting up on E is ok even for a metal tank?
And if I disconnect the battery is there anything I would need to do as far as the computer stuff goes.

i bought the new "vapor" stabil at Meijers this week, kinda gold colored, I will be using this winter even with my plastic tank.

I throw Stabil in it and fill it up as well as bring the batteries inside and keep them on tenders. Motorcycle also gets the carbs dumped out and the tank removed. No ****s given for the lawnmower.

I do have to look into longer term storage techniques. I don't think the BMW is going to come out next year so I would like to keep critters out and possibly squirt some oil in each cylinder bore.

Yes to a Battery Tender no to Stabil or any additives. Not in my mower, snowblower, leaf blower, etc. Never had an issue either. Never start my car during the winter either.

Whatever you do, don't run your car all the way to E since the gauge is off...

Stabil and fill for car and mower/lawn equipment. Done this since I've owned it all. Does it work? No clue. Is it harmful, apparently not. I've tried each pulling battery and using tender. I like the tender better but for no particular reason.
