  • How would you fix this?!?

This car is pretty much spotless aside from this irritating rust spot that was there when I bought it years ago. I need to fix it. Can't keep putting it off.
Now, I am not a body guy, at least not when it comes to this. I can do light body work but cutting and welding on a body is not my forte.
I do want it to look like it was never there. I want it done right is what I'm saying. How would I do that?

Looks like an area not seen when the hatch is closed, right?

I'd pull the weather strip, scrape the loose stuff off, sand smooth the part that is visible, seal it with a product like Rust Bullet, tape the area off, prime and paint with rattle cans.

Pretty ruff. To fix right you would have to cut it out

you could grind it down & use fiberfill on it but its only gonna last a few years unless you cut out the rust weld in new metal & repaint

Rust definitely looks too far gone for a quick easy done right fix. Cut out and replace or knock as much off as you can and bandaid it with POR or any other rust treatment product.

No body shops lol. And I'll buy the beers, come on out. Heated garage. I'd love to cut it out but that's a finicky area. Not just flat metal. It doesn't show when shut. I wanted to just grind it down and repaint it, but idk, pry just F it up. And I'd call chip foose Greg, but I don't think he'd come to MI to fix a 4" rust spot.. On a 96 camaro lol. I think I'll start cheap, if I can't make it look right the cheap way, then we're cutting. I guess first thing to do is grind her down and see how deep it is.

There are a few people at work who do body work on the side and are pretty good. You might want to ask Marge F. in Hibay. I also know a guy that runs a shop in Tecumseh that does restoration if you are interested but he's not cheap. Good luck.

Sand blast with a spot blaster, if there is any deep pits put Rust Mort over it, then epoxy primer, fill pits with filler, 2k prime, paint. I fix stuff like that all the time.

Wow lf93formula, didn't know you were on here. Loren I'm assuming. I'm still not back to work. Pry heard, I was hit with sarcoma cancer. Craziest thing ever. I'm in recovery mode now. I've never paid a dime to have my car worked on. I've done everything myself. I'd like to keep it that way but we'll see. Obviously money is super tight right now, medical bills are insane, I'm just gonna give it a go, it'll definitely look better than it does now. I just like things done right. I hate cutting corners, no pun intended.

Sounds like you have the right idea. Assess the damage then see what your options are.
