  • Picked the car up yesterday, finding a few minor quirks...

Most annoying being my speedo is off? It's a 3.23 car...previous owner(s) have every record, but nothing mentioning any kind of gear swap...when I'm traveling 45mph, the speedo is reading approx 37-38. I noticed this with the Radar/Speed signs on Mound road, and then I verified with my phone, and gps. It seems to be 7-8ish mph off.

    Any ideas?

Ring/pinion or tires. Jack up the back end and count how many turns the driveshaft makes to rotate the tire 1 time. About 3 and 3/4 turns is 3:73. little over 4 turns is a 4:10 etc.

Since it has aftermarket rims on it, I'd venture to say the overall height of the rim/tire combo isn't the same as stock.

You sure that's stock size for his car? My '94 came with 16s not 17s... When I went to 275/40/17s that threw my speedometer off.

Well if it's not the tires, then the only other option is gears.

I bet that a previous owner put 2.74 gears in it for freeway driving.

Its just weird that I have every receipt for every wiper blade, air freshener and oil change; but nothing mentioned of a gear swap? I'll jack it up when I can and check the ratio. I txted the previous owner, we'll see if he answers. "Hey noticed the speedo was off, not a big deal, just wondering if you know why?" Its just aggravating lol. Keeping my phone with a speedo on in my cup holder.

What's the VIN? Do you know what gears it came with stock? I can pull the RPO codes for you.

Someone could have changed the ratio in the tune.

Its a GU5 car with an aluminum driveshaft meaning it came with factory 3.23's

Why would someone screw with the ratio in the tune, though? That just doesn't make sense. If it's not the gears, not the tires, then yes tune or the speed sensor itself is acting up.

Just spoke to guy I bought it from...he said he knew it was a couple mphs off, but never really worried about it. He's not aware of any gear changes. Hm....
