Been trying to stop a leak from my 5.7L crankshaft position sensor. Garage changed the O-ring with dealer supplied/ordered o-ring but leaked worse after so I picked up about 6 different sizes including metric o-rings and tried them until I found one that was tight on i.d. and tight on o.d. but still let the unit push in. However, still leaks a few drips...very annoying! Anyone with a suggestion/experience on stopping this leak? Is it leaking from the thread holes where the hold down screw goes into the block? I'm about to try pulling it and use RTV above the o-ring and then push it up in and leave to cure in place! About at my wits end on this thing...don't like the black dots all over the drive way and garage floor.

First off....Welcome to the site and post those pics of your ride.

Have you thought about it could be leaking from being over tightened thus crushing the o-ring?

The o-ring fits in a groove/land on the sensor plug. It isn't a gasket as such. When you push the sensor up into the bore the o-ring makes contact with the i.d. of the plain bore. There is no ridge or land that the o-ring is pushed up against. It just seals with the bore walls at where ever that point of contact is in the plain bore. There are no other gaskets or seals. Since I changed the o-ring the last time it appears the leak has slowed to a matter of small drips, at least a big step ahead of what it was but then its still a nuisance.

yea no doubt it is... no dirty or debris allowing it to leak? have you tried to double up on the o-ring? no staying to keep it this way but to check to see if it stops leaking ?

There is only room for one o-ring in the groove on the sensor. I'd have to try to cut another groove on it in a lathe if that is possible without damaging the sensor. Again, I might just try gooping the whole thing up with RTV red high temp sealant and see if this does the trick but wanted to tap into the knowledge group here before I pull this last resort trick. After I do this it might be difficult to remove the sensor although this stuff usually stays resilient and might still allow the sensor to be pried out damaged or not.
