Ya 4.10s are a must for a t-56 4.30's are even better. I had 3.73 gears in my car and to be honest they sucked for my car I would never put anything lower then 4.10's in a t-56 car.

dad has 4.10's in his 02 SS LSX 427 1200 hp car... its too much gear... hes out of RPM by the 1320... when choosing gear you need to figure what tire size your going to run, what RPM your heads/cam is efficiant too, and how often do you want to break... the more you lean toward 4.10's you loose reliability, no way to sugar coat it, in an already weak rear end a 4.10 gear is like a fragile christmas ornament.
oh and i run a 3.42 in my boosted 383 on a 26 inch tall tire... i may have to go to a steeper gear but ill know when i get on the track.

You only lose reliability if your hooking up. The 4.10's make spinning alot more likely so they have a way of saving themselves.

You didn't break 4 set's on street tires. I said 4.10's are fine unless your hooking hard.

                Exactly, no hook no worries.

Guys gotta remember or maybe you just didnt know, Jon is doing a old school carb'd SBC build. Not a LS, or LT or boosted setup. Just old school SBC power with a T56 behind it. Granted he is using a 4th gen rear and we know they arent the best rear's out there but that is if you get traction... No traction then its not going to blow up as fast 4.10's would be perfectly fine for his setup and his purposes, Jon can correct me if I am wrong but I dont think he will be seeing too much track time this will mostly be a cruiser and a woodward car. Keep in mind Jon got a steal on the rear end and its kinda a budget build, as well.

I dont think he is worried about MPG's with this build either

I'm not sure whats wrong with your car but I went from 3.23 to 3.42's in my trans am and noticed 0 difference in mileage. If anything it went up. Car knocked down 17-18MPG city consistent

26" tire and 3.90's is roughly 2500 @ 70mph in 4th with the converter locked. My Jeep runs higher RPM than that @ 70 and it isn't an issue.

When I did the math last time I filled up my average came to 15.3xxxx. That was a good 50/50 mix of city and highway.

Did you check your car are you sure you dont have a bad o2 or something? I had a bad one and I didn't even know it no code or anything. 3.42 gear shouldn't have really hurt your mileage even with an auto. With a 6 speed I wouldn't even be concerned with the gears I turn 2200rpm@70 and Ive got 4.30 gears.

i split a set on a set on dunlop 5000's not hooking.. ive never broke a set at the track lol but i have terrible luck.
                        but like i said
once cruising down the road put the gas down from a 30 roll and the gears let loose
once turning a corner into my parents neighborhood
once taking off softly from a stoplight (below 2500 rpm)
                        and once screwing around...
all behind a T56... with my 3.42's behind an auto i pulled the wheels multiple times dead hooking with a set of 11.5x26 MT et streets

The 4.10 gear didn't break from ( turning a corner into my parents neighborhood) or (taking off softly from a stoplight (below 2500 rpm) they had to be already fatigued badly at that point and that's just when they happened to die. Did your car have bad tire hop? If not then honestly it sounds like whoever did the gear installs didn't know what they where doing. If the backlash and pattern isn't right on a gear it can really damage its strength. Im not saying the 4.10 gears are strong but you shouldn't break 4 sets that where installed right when your not hooking good.

There could be one last possibility maybe your just one of those people that tear shit up? Some people can break anything maybe that's the issue.

Just threw codes for o2s actually, I replaced both just in case but think the car needs a retune now because were having driveability issues after the new o2s. But even with the cammed 5.3 last year I drove all the way up north and back, all expressway, took a whole tank of gas, light was on when I was getting off the expressway by our house, and did the mi driven/gals used to fill up and got 21.2.

From my understanding it takes a little bit of time for the computer to adjust the fuel trims after getting the new o2 sensors.
