Okay, I need some opinions. . . The LT1 car I'm going to look at on Wednesday. . . It was in excellent condition before it was wrecked. The owner says it now has a light vibration while driving down the road, which he seems to think is due to the driveshaft losing a balancing weight when it went off the road. He has no problems with letting me drive the car before I commit to anything (generous, given the current state of the car), but said that he wants $1700 for it, or he'd sell everything I need for a trans swap for $1200. I'm inclined to put $1500 in front of him and see if he takes it, then pick up the parts that will be needed to repair the body, swap over the parts from the Formula, and put the Formula up for sale for $2500 after I put the heads on it, probably this spring/early summer. I'll have a 6 speed T-Top car, which I've always wanted, and it will have all the performance parts I already bought for the Formula, 60k less miles, and it will be getting a new paint job after the body work is done, so the exterior will be in much better shape.

My concerns are the extent of the damage, his price ($2k asking price seems high for a wrecked car, but $1500 could be reasonable, depending on the extent of the damage and the condition of the rest of the car), and the vibration while driving. If it's just a balance weight missing off the DS, it will be somewhat easy for me to tell, since there will be signs of one having been there before. Not to mention, my old car's driveshaft was thrown out of whack by a missing balance weight, and I know how the car feels. Much different than a wheel out of balance, yet still somewhat similar.

What do you guys think? I'd have $500 into the Firebird, probably $1000 more into the Camaro to fix the body damage, and I think I could get $2500 out of the 'bird selling it. Heck, with 150k miles, I paid more than $3k for it.

Nick you need to find a way to shorten your posts. I am always way too ADD to get through them

In any case... all youre going to offer is 1500? Hell, I'd be trying more like $1000. $200 bucks doesn't cover a whole lot of cost in a project like this.

Can't afford to go that route, I'd be spending $1200+ just on heads and cam
just on heads and cam? in all seriousness, you would have to be pulling some crazy deals to get a head/cam swap done for that price in general, regardless of specs.

agreed. If you can get some smoking deals and do a heads/cam swap for $1200 more power to you. But realistically speaking, that is going to be more of a real-world cost for just a nice cam swap once all said and done

That's just for the actual port work and rebuild on my heads, plus a billet cam through LE. That doesn't include any of the other required parts. I was just replying to Brian's post above saying I should get heads and cam from the same person.

I'm going to try to lowball him, but honestly, I'm good at reading people, and this guy didn't sound like he was in too much of a hurry to sell the car. I'm going to shoot for $1,000, but if I can get it for $1400-$1600, I'm going to take it, depending on the condition of the rest of the car. I can probably save the quarter panel, I have the tools and know-how to get it taken care of, but the rocker (inner and outer) will need replaced. Those panels alone will cost nearly $300. Add paint cost to that, materials, etc., and I'll have $2500 into it before I know it.

Going to look at the 94 Z28 I mentioned above this afternoon. I'm going to try to get him down around $1400. I won't pay more than $1500 for it. If I can get him down on the price a bit, I may be bringing it home this week.
