Okay, I need some opinions. . . The LT1 car I'm going to look at on Wednesday. . . It was in excellent condition before it was wrecked. The owner says it now has a light vibration while driving down the road, which he seems to think is due to the driveshaft losing a balancing weight when it went off the road. He has no problems with letting me drive the car before I commit to anything (generous, given the current state of the car), but said that he wants $1700 for it, or he'd sell everything I need for a trans swap for $1200. I'm inclined to put $1500 in front of him and see if he takes it, then pick up the parts that will be needed to repair the body, swap over the parts from the Formula, and put the Formula up for sale for $2500 after I put the heads on it, probably this spring/early summer. I'll have a 6 speed T-Top car, which I've always wanted, and it will have all the performance parts I already bought for the Formula, 60k less miles, and it will be getting a new paint job after the body work is done, so the exterior will be in much better shape.
My concerns are the extent of the damage, his price ($2k asking price seems high for a wrecked car, but $1500 could be reasonable, depending on the extent of the damage and the condition of the rest of the car), and the vibration while driving. If it's just a balance weight missing off the DS, it will be somewhat easy for me to tell, since there will be signs of one having been there before. Not to mention, my old car's driveshaft was thrown out of whack by a missing balance weight, and I know how the car feels. Much different than a wheel out of balance, yet still somewhat similar.
What do you guys think? I'd have $500 into the Firebird, probably $1000 more into the Camaro to fix the body damage, and I think I could get $2500 out of the 'bird selling it. Heck, with 150k miles, I paid more than $3k for it.
