I know it's common for the LS1 to have blow-by oil (can someone explain what this means please?). I revved my car in the garage earlier and the exhaust had a slight blue tint to it. I'm guessing I'm burning some blow-by oil. What catch can are you guys running? I've seen them on ebay for $30 and the elite engineering ones for quite a bit more. What one are you guys/gals running?

Catch cans are usually only used on race cars.
If you are using oil than a catch can isn't going to do you much good.
You need to find out the reason you are using the oil.
Might just be something as simple as valve seals.
If you notice the smoke when you let off the throttle then there is a good chance it is the valve seals.
You can change those on the engine.
Do a wet and dry compression check to see if it is the piston rings.Last edited by ezcruisn71; November 25th, 2010, 08:44 PM.

Interesting... thanks RickOriginally posted by ezcruisn71 View PostCatch cans are usually only used on race cars.

I know Larry is running one, and it seemed like a lot of guys over on tech are running them also. I don't think I'm burning much oil, if any - just a precautionary measure I'm thinking about taking.
My car is definitely not a race car, just some headers and an intake2000 Trans Am l 1967 Firebird

Yeah I was looking at that one also, thanks. If you're catching oil, sounds like it might be worth doing...Originally posted by OIF1VET View PostI have one, believe I bought it from Thunderracing.com.. I had oil in my intake prior to installing, none since....2000 Trans Am l 1967 Firebird

Also make sure your PCV valve is working good. They are usually very cheap and easy to replace.
I have seen bad PCV valves cause some oil burning also.

LS motors are notorious for this, I run a catch can. I'd also look into the LS6 style pcv system and as mentioned a new pcv valve is cheap insurance.Doing less with more

not from blow by
the pcv system on ls1's suck. depending on your setup the pcv pulls from the valley or valve cover. both of which can suck oil mist out of the engine.
the catch can is used inline with the pcv and sucks the mist through a mesh and allows the oil to drop out of the vacuum.
If you remove the zip tube(and MAF) open the TB and look into the intake I will bet you $100 you will see oil in the intake
Catch can wont stop it 100% but it does help

Catch cans do work if you buy one that actually works (not all catch cans are created equal). I am running a dual set-up made by Saikou Michi ( http://www.saikoumichi.com/Stage1_LS1_page.html )along with a custom PCV system. See pics below for before/after catch can install:
Before:

After:

Notice how much cleaner the intake is after the install and this was after only 200 or so easy miles on my car.
