  • Clutch help needed please.

As many of you know, my engine was rebuilt last spring and Kyle put in a Spec II (piece of trash) clutch. Last fall I asked him to drive the car while I took some video. He dumped the clutch at about 3k and the clutch took a dump. It stunk bad....literally. So now I guess we won't know for sure if I need an entire new clutch kit or if the friction disc (or whatever it was that Kyle called it) just needs to be replaced.

So my question is, if I need an entire new setup, what should I go with. Opinions, suggestions, please! And don't even think about suggesting a Spec clutch.

I was looking at Monster but not even sure if they make those for the LT1's and besides, the price is outta this world right now. So what about Hays or anything else and where is the best place to get the best price?

Edit: I forgot to mention that the car is drivable but if you try to get on it, the clutch slips. It has to be driven in Sloooo-Moooootionnnnnn

I would use a centerforce dual friction. I have put mine through a lot of hell, broke 10 bolts, and taught a couple people to drive manual transmissions, and is holding up great. Stock pedal feel, nice and easy engagement. I love it. I believe thats what Kyle has also IIRC. But thats my recomendation, a centerforce. Good luck Red, maybe we can do some Allegan county hillbilly cruising this summer if you get it together, lol. Looking forward to it, Eric L

I'm not sure Larry. After "it" happened, Kyle drove the car back to my house and I haven't been in it since. So Kyle could probably tell you more about it. He was just down here yesterday and pulled the fuel injectors. I'm just thinking as soon as I can, I'd like to have someone take a look at the clutch. I'm hoping it isn't so bad that I need an entire new setup.

I am guessing that the Spec clutch worked fine... the combination of cam surge with that big cam and having to go slow on a dirt road could have wore it out prematurely Performance clutches dont like being slipped.

The clutch was put in when Kyle did the rebuild so it only had a few thousand miles on it. And I don't see how driving slow for one mile on a dirt road once in a great while would wear the clutch out.

That I do not know. I am calling Kyle and maybe he will get in here and answer.

This is deffinately Larrys cup of tea. He will steer you in the right direction no doubt. But Joel is correct. These aftermarket clutches dont like to be slipped from my experience. But, like I said, this is Larrys cup of tea. Eric L

The clutch engaged with very little pedal travel left, maybe an 1/8

I would say the pedal was average ht. Larry, came back nice with no resistance.
Red has less than 3000 miles on the whole setup.

No, stock Hyd. cylinder with stock Clutch Fork assembly.

What I'm thinking happened is what Joel said and I have told Red this also.
When we drove out to the video shoot the clutch was acting fine but I think that it was glazed (like riding the break) and when I dumped it I just finished her off.
That clutch is a SPEC 2 and rated for 560 Ft Lbs of torque so it should have held that car just fine.

When we get the injectors back we will be taking the car to a shop to drop the trans and I'll be there to see the carnage.
I'm sure the Flywheel will have massive heat marks and the Friction Disk................. I'm sure is well done!

I have told Red that a Center Force Dual Friction is a nice clutch if she wants to replace it but we would look at also doing a Friction Disk replacement if it can be done to save money.

I did suggest the SPEC because I had one and loved it but my rear main blew and so I bought the Center Force.

spec are known for slipping after a few thousand miles.
I havent played with many lt1s but they use a ball and fork like old m22's and such.
specs slip after that time due to breakin. the fingers move out during break-in and wear. if there isnt enough travel(common on ls1) they never fully release.
I have heard of a few instances on lt1's were the adjustable ball is needed to move the fork enough to unload the slave/fork

So Larry what clutch would you recommend? If the clutch isn't total trash would it be worth fixing or should I just get a new clutch? Just trying to figure out expense wise what I might be looking at.

                            This baby was smokn' bad!
In fact the clutch pedal wen all the way down when she did.
Once I gave it time to cool it was back to normal but wouldn't grab under hard acceleration.
