  • Camshaft Mayhem

I do not know much when it comes to camshafts. If anyone can break it down for me that would be great. I am planning a build so I am wondering what camshaft I should use.

    Here are the details.

LE2 heads, 6LiterEater Long Tube Race headers, Port intake manifold, True Dual 2.5in exhaust, Dyno tuned, 4.10 gears and then later a 383 stroker.

So any thoughts on what kind of cam I should run?

This will not be a daily driver, a street/strip car.

Honestly, if you're going with LE2 heads, get an LE matched cam.

I would wait so that you can match everything to the 383.

Completely agree. Tell LE how drivable you need it to be, what kind of power you want to make, and he will give you a cam.

Hmmm alright means more money needed then hahahah. Well I just spent 14 hours last night 5pm to 7:30am in Detroit. A tree took out a pole and put it right through the dudes house had to cut the tree off for the linemen. Mmmm double time. Haha

Custom ground cam really isn't that much more expensive, and definitely worth it to get a cam that will fit your exact needs

first of all, hold off everything and learn what all the various cam specs mean/do. You will be much, much, much more happy ballparking your own specs than you would be by just getting whatever off the shelf cam joe blow recommends to you. Take youre time and learn the stuff, slap on a pair of headers to keep you happy in the meantime. it wont be time wasted as 80% of the work in a header swap is getting the stock shit out.

start by reading this thread i stickied a while back. read it a few times over until it sinks in.
              http://www.mifbody.com/vbulletin/sho...amshaft-Basics

Also, its gonna sound ridiculous but a great way to learn about how engines react to various cam specs is actually watching youtube videos. Check out my channel if you want, its the same as my screename here.

After that I recommend giving Lloyd or Advanced Induction a call. Lloyd will talk your ear off and even a vet like me will learn tons from him.

I believe that everything should always be matched in an engine build. you can use the same cam in a 383 as a 355 but I wouldnt recommend it. I have a relatively small cam paired with stock heads and I dont think there are very many cars with stock heads that could beat me.

One last thing to keep in mind - many of the "shelf" grinds for LT1s are ancient. Money is well spent on a LE/AI cam imo, but that doesnt mean all the shelf cams are worthless.

I completely agree with Joel, but no one will have more knowledge on the choice than a shop like AI or LE, just make sure you know what they are talking about first

Are you gonna install both of them Nate?

I think it'd be beneficial to match the heads and cam to the 383. You'll be able to utilize larger port volumes and thus a larger cam. Like they say the 205cc runners are recommended for a stock 350 and 225's are recommended for wild builds or larger cubes.

I like the idea of the hotcam. Cheap, cheap cheap. It be nice for a year then take it out and do something similar to Joels. Im just not ready for a fully cam'd car. Thats where hotcam comes in and fills the void. For most people though, do it once and do it right.

IMO its not worth the cost of gaskets to swap in a hotcam. Very little to gain over stock.
