Almost reminds me of the supercharger me and a buddy were trying to develop in college. More for S&G, but it never really left the ground off paper. It used an A/C clutch to engage and "pull" the screws into position to start packing the cylinders. I had the idea running around after I had seen "My Science Project". The idea of a SC that you could turn on and off at any time? Well, at the time, it was too cool of an idea. I think what killed it was the machining cost at the very beginning.

I kind of like the idea though. If it lasts through the test & tune, I'd probably give it a try with the 'Bird.

Keep in mind that it gave them enough boost to get 50% more on a 1.2L It'll have to produce 5x that to get the same results on a 5.7L
Maybe if one of us rigged up 5 of them?

        Used to own a Firebird.

Its early in the design phase. Start low and work your way up.

Its a great idea, if they could make it cheap enough....OEM's may grab on.

          SC'd DI V8 with 350 hp....yum.

If they could perfect it, however, flicking the switch would be like turning the dash key in the older ZR1s. Wouldn't be a bad thing.

The guy I had do a lot of the work on my Camaro had that setup in his Ranger. Turned on and off via switch, it was a centrifugal with an AC clutch.

                    And BTW, that movie rocks.

has anyone done the math to figure out how much energy is required to drive a boost system?

I'll tell you one thing... 100 amps at 12v isnt enough to do much..

Which is why it's feasible, only in theory, for very small displacement motors.

We've probably got an easy decade before concepts are even on the drawing board for even moderate V6 displacements.

I'm so glad that movie hasn't been forgotten and the ESC I was working with (mainly because this was like back in '90) was a 6-71. I'm actually glad that someone came up with the idea and made it work. Wish I would've started with something like that. I'd like to see some vids, if any exist.

I thought I had seen a video of a 5th gen. with a roots blower on it around that when it was at low rpm the pulley on the supercharger wasn't spinning, but when he got on it it seemed to engage. That's probably why they can get so good of gas mileage with the supercharger, until they hit it. But how would that work when it isn't spinning? Does the air just pass over the screws?

                              Pretty much.
