I honestly think those are a waste of time and money. By the time you probably build a project using them where you'd normally use a torque wrench you could of probably bought like 10 torque wrenches.

That comment about torque wrenches being off as much as 30%. Mine might be off by 1% but they get calibrated once a year.

I do see those bolts coming in handy for guys that work up high on radio towers or stuff. Don't have to lug as many tools up on your tool belt... Would be great for NASA too!

what if you cross thread the bolt? lol
I wonder what the shelf like these will be? Kinda like the green eye on the AC Delco batteries. The eye is still OK but it doesn't hold a charge??

I don't get it - if I get a bolt that has to be torqued down to 100ft/lbs of torque... and then a bolt that has to be torqued down to 20ft/lbs of torque... do they both still turn black?

I would imagine they are made with different torque specs.

Neat! I wonder if that color jobbie effects the durability of the bolt?

basically its a built in stretch gauge. Stretch is a lot more accurate than using a torque wrench. not sure how accurate that system woul be though

i could see alot of good uses and also alot of bad uses.

Definately not a complete replacement of a torque wrench, but a neat invention

Could be neat, but I bet you cant re-use them though.

These have been out for a little while now, you can actually buy them. Yes, they are re-usable as long as you do not yield the bolt, no they don't go bad. They operate off of a very simple strain guage. Their big advantage is for fastener monitoring after they are installed. Visual checks can be done very quickly. Re-checking torque on a fastener with a torque wrench is a very inaccurate.
