  • 3rd gen motor mounts, WOW!

Finally pulled my sons engine tonight. Motor mounts were shot so I thought I'd take thirty seconds and change them.

    Man was I wrong.

What a pain. Bent my box wrench and got it in the drivers side, no problem. The pass side was insane.

Got everything back together except the washers. Those mounts make the trans bolts seem easy.

Yeah with out a lift, extensions, swival sockets and a impact, they are pretty bad.

Did it with a combination wrench and a "custom" bent box wrench while my kid worked the top with a ratchet while listening to me invent new curse words.

Oh yeah, I was gonna replace the mounts on my el camino I built a few years ago and decided after already buying the new mounts that the old ones were just fine lol

These were shot. You could move the rubber around by hand.

Think I scored some dad points. I let my son give it a try, he could not believe I got the wrench up there.

Just for informational purposes... What's the issue with changing the mounts?
                  Access?
                  Clearance?
                  Frozen bolts?
                  Blind bolts/holes?

Access is a mother! I ended up making some custom wrenches.

Just from looking at 4th gens I imagine the answer is all of the above.

                        access and clearance. Very tight.

it would have been best if the GM had welded the nuts on the back side...gotta remove the spring to get the best access.

Thats what I'd assumed they would have done.

Id love to watch an engineer work in his own car.
