  • 3.8 motor swap help

Hey guys, how hard is it to swap the motor in the camaro because Ive never changed a motor in a camaro? Would it just be easier to tear some stuff off the motor and go out the top?

swapping in a new 3.8 or going to a different type of engine?

Out the bottom is the easiest, drop the kmember, engine and trans all as one. No need to take the engine apart then.

putting in a 3800 from a 97 camaro. I know i need to change the intake because they are different. But idk if i feel comfortable lifting the car up to change the motor. Im gonna do it myself with a buddy, and ive never taking a motor out of a camaro before.. Plus i dont have the money to go pay for it to get done

Dropping the motor out the bottom is by far the easiest way. Put rear tires on tires and rims from front this gives good ground clearance in back. Drain fluids, pull radiator and hoses, disconnect brake lines at anti lock unit. disconnect battry harness, and PCm harness and fuel lines. Disconnect drive shaft at rearend, and trans shift cable. Then take cherry picker and lower front on to a 4 wheel dolly. Disconnect the top shock bolts and then the 3 kframe bolts on each side. then lift body slowly and make sure everything disconnected. Lift body high enough and roll engine and trans out from under car.
I have done this 4 times and most of what I detailed above you have to do to pull out the top. There is a thread on here that gives list of steps and pictures. Includes build in licoln log stack to rest car on while engine out.
        Edit:
I forgot to tell you to disconnect the exhaust. The engine harness also has 3 wire that are plugged in under dash on passenger side. Rest of harness can come out with engine.
