if the parts car grand national is selling for cheap, i'm for sure getting it, kind of debating on taking the motor out of such a kick ass car though. It might be better to just restore it

Apparently there wasn't that much difference in the motors GN vs GNX according to:
http://home.att.net/~buickGNX/GNX/engine.htm
He says the GNX is rated at: "276hp@4400 and 360ft-lbs@2600 of torque"
The 89 Turbo TA was rated around 250hp. According to:
http://www.89tta.com/ttahist.htm
"Although Pontiac officially rated the engine at 250 HP, in reality it developed an honest 301 HP on the GM dyno."
Finally, for comparison, the "Supercharged 3.8-liter, 3800 SFI Series II V-6 that delivers 240 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and produces 280 pounds-per-foot of torque" as quoted at"
http://www.wheelsdirect2u.com/pontiac-bonneville.htm
But, that's not a reliable source, 'cause that's supposed to be the engine in the 2006 SSEi (there are no 06 Bonnevilles).

I sseriously doubt that last one about the Bonne because Pontiac has been using 3.8L 3800 Series III Supercharged engines for a few years now.Originally posted by ZeeVertApparently there wasn't that much difference in the motors GN vs GNX according to:

ya but you have to remeber with a supercharger all you have to do is get a different pulley maybe a little larger injectors and your adding alot of power... its a shame it takes so much to fit the fwd s/c 3800 into an f body because it would be a great way for the 3.1 3.4 guys and even the 3.8 NA motor guys to add alot of power cheep for about 400 bucks you can get any supercharged 3800 fwd version up past the 300hp mark and still be very reliable... but i know there is a clearance problem with the supercharger have to notch it or modify with a sledgehammer something...Originally posted by Frank The TankTook the restrictor plate off to give the Red Dragon a little more juice. But it's not exactly street legal, so keep it on the down low.

You're right dave the L67 is a cheap engine to modify and get alot of power cheap and still be reliable also still get good gas mileage, and alot of people have swapped it into their project cars and ran impressive times, I was going to swap it into my Lumina Project car then I bought a F-Body instead
and I've even seen f-body guys swap it into their cars, again these are V6 guys, but I've never heard of any clearance issues with it going into anything, even the j-body guys can sqeeze it in their cars with a new sub-frame of course, but I say to all the 3.8 f-bodies just get forged internals and go turbo, you'll yield must better performace in the long run.

well im saying like the 3.4 just direct swap to a s/c 3800... the problem is the s/c hits the firewall and top of the body where the glass meets... you could toss a na 3800 in a 3.4 but a s/c takes some moving ive seen a couple not alot... have to notch some of the metal and be careful of the glass... but for the price... i mean your talking 100hp if not more with a pretty easy engine swap... i know in the fwd version you can toss the 3.1 3.4 and 3.8 on pretty much anything aslong as the trans matches... which in most lumina base cars it does... 4t60e and 4t65e... so im sure putting that onto a 3.4 rwd would be almost as easy..Originally posted by Frank The TankTook the restrictor plate off to give the Red Dragon a little more juice. The swap would be too intensive for what it's worth. If you're trying to accomplish the 'different' factor.. build the OHC 3.4 and turbo that with Megasquirt, it would be a much better turbo motor than a pushrod 3.8...
The best option in your case would be an LT or LS swap, it's just too easy.

The pushrod V - platform is tried and true. Whats so great about overhead cams? More rotational friction... more cams to replace if you want to upgrade... wider heads, harder to work on...Originally posted by Insomnya3AMit would be a much better turbo motor than a pushrod 3.8...
Pushrods forever!

i was gonna say the boosted 3.8 market is already huge... it would cost more in the long run to build a 3.4 capable to reach the numbers they have already proven to get outta a 3.8.. although a v-8 would be the best bet im just saying for a fairly easy swap it would be worth the money... and then once you do the swap the mods are so cheep you really wouldnt need a v-8Originally posted by Frank The TankTook the restrictor plate off to give the Red Dragon a little more juice. GNX? Turbo?
First time I've heard anyone say swapping in a V8 was trivial. Musta missed something. Looking at these pix (see link) it isn't surprising that people talk about clearance problems at the firewall with the supercharged v6.

Edit: looks like it's the Turbo setup that needs room at the back, not so much the supercharger. Still I can't find F-bodies mentioned specifically at http://www.L67swap.com.Last edited by mister_grendel; March 11th, 2006, 01:48 PM.

L67 "upgrade"
Day-um. I mean... just... day-um. After rolling through 5 pages of intense postings on the l67swap site, the consensus from a butt-load of knowledgeable people seems to be...
The V8 swap is *easier* than trying to get a supercharged or turbocharged 3.8L v6 into an F-body.
At least that's what I got out of it... did anybody else read it and come to the same conclusion?
