Now would be the time to upgrade to a newer rear with disc brakes. With disc brakes if it chucks the c-clip the brake pad will hold the axle in. You should be able to get a 4th gen rearend pretty cheap.

4th gen rear will not work for Grant's car, its bagged and IIRC the rear tires are already a real tight fit.

Correct. A 4th gen rear will push these 20" x 10" out just a little too far. The fender lip is all ready sitting on the tire when I air out.

Here's a question - the carrier from a 4th gen will fit the axle housing right? A 10 bolt is a 10 bolt.

Yes. Late in the 1989 model year they switched to 28 spline axles (previous were 26) which stayed the same all the way up to 2002. If you want to go to a posi I'd recommend a 99+ Zexel-Torsen unit as there are no clutches to wear out...unless you get a great deal on an Aurburn unit that has been breakaway tested.

I'm going to hit a pick apart tomorrow morning to find the pieces I need. If I can find a posi unit I'll just switch over otherwise I'm just going to find the spider gears and center pin and bolt and call it a day. I'm not worried about the axle at this point. I may regret that in the future but for now I'll deal with the budget I have.

Inspect the carrier housing really closely before putting new thrust washers and spider gears in.

I had a center section in my Jimmy eat itself up once. I powerwashed it all clean, installed all brand new parts from DTS, and it lasted one or two thousand miles before it ate itself again. The carrier's machined surfaces were roughed up just enough to turn the new thrust bearings into glitter.

Oh, s10/Blazer/Jimmy/etc use the same diffs...that should make the search much easier.

Little update. Im going to have to buy a whole new carrier anyway. As best i can tell, the center pin (when the lock bolt shered off) spun with the smaller spider gear, it caused the holes in the carrier to enlarge or oblong. There is some clear play from the center pin when put back in the carrier. My guess is thats why the c clip fell out, because of that "play". So even if the spider gears, thrust washers, center pin and lock bolt were replaced, chances are it will toss the c clip again just like before. So a whole new diff is in order.

pick a apart was a bust. Apparantly my usual pick a part was bought out by another company a few weeks ago and they are in the process of reorganizing thier entire inventory so i couldnt even find the chevys. The trucks were there but all of the s10s/blazers etc. were picked clean. Compleate waste of a morning. Im just going to have to buy one on line i guess.

Want me to get quote for shipping my 7.5* carrier? It's got 4.10 gear on it at the moment if I recall. I even have new carrier bearings I can put on it if you wish. I can also strip the carrier for you and ship just that.

I also have a questionable torsen zexel carrier. I didn't use it because I measured .007 runout on the ring gear surface which caused the gear backlash to change and would bind while I was setting up the gears.

I appreciate it Jon. If the zexel torsen unit is questionable, i trust your judgment, dont even bother. I dont want to worry about it. The other carrier you mentioned... 4.10s is a bit steep for a daily IMO. Is it a 3 series or 2 series carrier?

Question, for as easy as I am on my car and as little driving as I do, is a Gov-lok lsd ok? Ive heard how prone they are to breakage especially in 10 bolts but they gotta be better than an open carrier, right?

Gov-loc is fine in low powered applications, especially street cars. They don't do well with heavy offroad wheels and sudden acceleration/deceleration scenarios.

Grant, my diagnosis: the thrust bushings wore which could cause a non axial load on the center pin. This would cause the lock bolt to sheer then let the center pin to wallow out the holes. A wallowed center pin plus worn out thrust bushings would be enough to cause a c-clip to fall out.
