I have a couple carriers on the shelf. If one is good, it's yours. No charge.

I'm not a powertrain guy, but just going off of any other part I would not put that axle back in the car again. Those teeth are really rough.

I have guy local to me that has an almost perfect gov lok dif with a set of 3.73 gears on it from an s-10 he never used. Said he was worried about it breaking with the amount of power he was makimg so went a differant route. I think im just going to take him up on it and get this done. Ive read numerous horror stories about these gov lok set ups being weak and breaking if you look at it wrong but im not drag racing, im not rock crawling, and my car doesnt make enough power to even break the tires loose anyway so it should be just fine.

and Devin, i agree they do look rough. But if it puts your mind at ease i took the splinded spoder gear from the carrier and slid it onto the axle just to see, it went on with not hang ups and held nice and tight. Passengers side axle doesnt look any better than that either so....

Just curious, does anyone know what kind of LSD would have come from the factory in a 96' Z28?

Should be Auburn. Torsen started in 2000 I believe.

98 was the last year for the Auburn. Once they are worn out, they are done as the stock units cannot be rebuilt.

OK, cool. Just wondering because Epic's rear was strong and never gave me any issues. Could light both tires up very easily too. Good to know.

Nevermind, i think i figured it out. This is an Auburn type LSD. This is what i pulled out of the rear end. So.... Damn. Going to a gov lock is a down grade. I swear i have the worse luck lately.

I appreciate it Tyler, but that's not much more help. LOL

This keeps getting better and better. From what I understand the way an Auburn unit works, is the springs and the spring plates apply an amount of "pre-load" on the larger spider gears with the cone friction thingys. When the wheels loose traction the cintrifical sp? force pulls the gears apart and the friction cone rubs on the inside of the carrier causing the lock up...

Here's the interesting part. When I took this out of the car and took it apart to find the issue with the center pin and lock bolt, (not thinking much of it at the time) 2 of the springs in the spring plate were missing. Without the springs being "complete" the pre-load on the larger spider gears wasn't there... it was in essence an open diff anyway.

I found the missing springs in the cavity in between the pinion gear and the yoke. How they wound up in there and not the bottom of the housing with the c-clip is beyond me. Makes me think my inital impression of this never being opened before maybe wrong. Someone was in there before and screwed up the install of the diff. Again, my luck is getting worse it seems.

ok maybe this is just me, but I am missing this. When rear's break around here we usually just swap the whole rear. Easier, cheaper and a half day work your back on the road. Are you not even looking for a complete rear?

No, because I'm working with a very limited budget. Pick-a-part was a bust and the only auto salvage yard I found locally that had one wanted $300 for it. I can't go 4th gen due to them sticking out further than the 3rd gen. This stupid Gov-lok is next to free so that's why I'm going that route. Money is the constraint here, Darren. Sorry.

Money is always the constraint people spend upwards of 600-800 rebuilding these things and you can find used ones for 150-350 all day long.
