It sounds like Michael has you in the pointed in the right direction.

You being a homeowner now I am sure you have got into some project that made you question what the last person was thinking. Their repair might have worked but it was not a proper solution.
We have a Studebaker Avanti in the shop right now that was just restored. The backlash of the rear was 10 thousands over spec.

If I were you I would just live with it until it breaks. It will cost a lot to rebuild the rear end and at the end of the day it is still a 10 bolt. If you upgrade to a C5 or plan to add more power to the LT1.... theose factors might influence my decision on what path I would pick to proceed in.

I agree Brian the biggest reason i am concerned about replacing it is i see it as a safety concern. More than once the car has randomly shot sideways on a 1-2 or 2-3 shift from the power kicking all to one side. It never used to do that. I am going to check where the fluid level is currently and go from there.

Edit: ultimately id like a 9" so i can reliably run a bigger gear and stickier tire, but 4k is not in the budget right now.

I think I'd keep an eye out for a complete 10 bolt to swap in.

I have a drum 2.73 rear with an open carrier if you're looking to build one for practice. Really won't do you any good though bring a drum thirdgen axle. You'd need to modify the ends of the tubes for the brakes, get a new carrier and gears, and blast/paint it.

Appreciate the offer Jon but ive got too busy of a schedule to do that. I think Fred has the right answer. Problem will be finding one with low miles. Granted this one has endured a lot

Its too bad i cant make a 4-channel resr work, i think my buddy still has the one from his gold Z.

Why couldn't you? Do you still have ABS on your car?

Yes i still have abs, get a lot of inner tire lockup without it autocrossing.

You could try this but its a risk.
I would guess a complete disc brake used rear end will cost $150-300 plus, + $50-100 in parts(brake fluid, gear end fluid, gasket, brakes?), + your time. Only to find out the posi is tired....
I wouldn't put the kibosh on the idea, I just do not want to see you doing the project twice. Let it be, Rebuild it, or upgrade!

If i do that it will be from a trusted source. I have all winter to look. Wish i could afford the 9" right now, but after buying a house that aint happenin.

I have a buddy with a Dana 60... has lt1 brakes and comes with a strange cromoly drive shaft. ... 1500 picked up... 4000 miles

He bought a notch and that has a 4 link so it won't work with his new car...
