It sounds like Michael has you in the pointed in the right direction.
You being a homeowner now I am sure you have got into some project that made you question what the last person was thinking. Their repair might have worked but it was not a proper solution.
We have a Studebaker Avanti in the shop right now that was just restored. The backlash of the rear was 10 thousands over spec.
If I were you I would just live with it until it breaks. It will cost a lot to rebuild the rear end and at the end of the day it is still a 10 bolt. If you upgrade to a C5 or plan to add more power to the LT1.... theose factors might influence my decision on what path I would pick to proceed in.
