  • Metal Shavings in Diff - this look normal?

    Hey MiFbody -

2000 SS M6. Has 70k on it. I have no history on the car, so I have no clue the last time, if ever, this thing was cracked open.

Dropped the cover today to change the fluid....how does this look to you all? I know some shavings are normal, but I don't know how to quantify "some":

Magnet, didn't touch this at all. None of them look like chunks - all shavings.

Lube looked good to me, light in color. Wonder if it was changed semi-recently? I didn't see any evidence on the cover, looked it it was never touched, or at least not touched for a long time.

First pic is the magnet that's epoxy'd to the back of the cover.

looks normal especially if it has never been changed. You will always have a metal "sludge" built up on that magnet and as long as there aren't any chunks you should be good.

And another thing.....when I gun the motor, I want the whole world to think it's coming to an end.

Sweet - this really makes me feel better. I'm at stock power levels, but I know I am not incredibly easy on the 10-bolt, and who knows what the two PO's did to it. With all the horror stories, I feel much better now having looked in there and not seeing anything bad.

            She's all buttoned back up!

the first pic is so close you cant really get a since of how much is really there, but looks totally normal to to me, no big shavings or chunks of metal. drain it, clean it, fill it, drive it!!

Mine looked like a round rubber donut from all the shavings, so yours looks pretty clean to me.

Good to know, thanks again guys. It's all buttoned back up. Few more things to do and it'll be ready for summer (after a good wash, damn is that thing dusty!)
