  • Thin trans fluid causing THIS?

OK, I will feely admit I'm still somewhat of a NOOB when it comes to this stuff. I've been working on cars since I was ten, but I've never gone "full internal" on an engine, and transmissions are greek to me. But...

On my 2000 Trans Am, I have what I would describe as a wicked hesitation. So long as I keep the throttle below 50% pedal, it seems fine. If I push it to the floor, it seems fine. In the in between space, it seems to throttle fine, then it "dumps down". The closest thing I can liken it to is traction control, or ESP. Its like you lose throttle response and it bogs or lags. The only codes it is setting is for a cat problem on the drivers side. It doesn't misfire, though it does have a slight dieseling sound at high load. Not tied to the other issue usually.
While at Bens, his friend, well I guess our friend now, Dane took a look at it and a quick ride. He believes that the trans fluid may be old/burned/thined out, and the trans isn't building proper pressure to shift properly. The fluid DOES smell a little burned, and I will be doing a complete flush and filter on it.

So has anyone else heard of anything like this? What else should I be looking at?

Careful if you plan on doing a full flush/fill. Would free up some nasty stuff. How many miles are on it?

I believe my trans was never serviced and I am at 107k, so dropped the pan and replaced filter and filled back up. Upon dropping the pan seen at least 1/4 in of metals shavings built up on the magnet..maybe a tad less or tad more don't remember.

But I know I am close to a rebuild, and glad I didn't do a full flush. If my trans went, no way I could afford a rebuild this year.

129K on it right now. I know what you mean, thats why I'm a little leery of doing it too, don't want to create new problems trying to diagnose an old one.

Clean your MAF with CRC MAF spray cleaner, it can have a nasty effect on shifting and is easy to try?

Poor reading from the MAF or TPS can cause funny shifts.

Drop the pan, clean it and the magnet, replace the filter, and fill it back up.
