The torque of a 406 will break a 10 bolt in short order if you have a decent tire on it. Shop around on TGO I have seen used 9" rears go for $1500...money well spent IMHO.

Thanks James! What rear are you running in your car? An LS1 and a six speed is a pretty stout combo too. I was looking around on Summit and priced a couple posi units, I can do that for around $300-$500. I was thinking maybe a 4th gen rear too. I would have to have it narrowed though. Don't know what kind of money all that involves. If I could find something that will hang through next summer, I would be happy. I will be checking TGO for a 9 inch. I have had pretty good luck with stuff that I have bought from guys on there.

I wouldn't spend the money on a new posi unit if you're going to go 9 inch down the road. Used torsen units tend to hold their value around $150-200, plus they are 100% gear driven so no clutches to wear out. The only down side is that they will free wheel (exception - t-2r) when one side has zero traction

I run a 9". I busted the 10 bolt first time I wheel hopped and that was before I supercharged the ls1.

do not waste your money on building a 10 bolt.. just keep saving and baby the 10 bolt til you can afford a 9 inch.. end of story

I'd doubt you'd lose money by putting in a cheap used (working) carrier to make the car go sideways in the mean time. Nobody wants to buy an open diff rear Recoup the cost of the used carrier plus some for the rear itself? Food for thought.

Don't buy a new Eaton/Auburn unit. Don't buy a girdle. Don't weld the tubes. Save up for the 9"

Thanks Michael! I think that will be my plan. Chances are I wont have the motor finished by spring, so I think spending a little on a carrier wont be an issue. Chances are the car will be out in the spring with the 305 in it still. This is my first build up of a toy. Locating and gathering parts has been a huge pain. I have a bunch of money tied up right now in other stuff as well. It seems that once I finally have the money to have the work done, the guys I had set up to do it want to back out. What a joke!
