  • 4l80 vs th400

Im looking to build my 98 camaro and the old 4l60 is shot.im gunna be building a reverse manual valve body, trans brake, and a 3400-3500 stall. School me on which one would be better to build and preferably cheaper.

I don't know the answer, but good move stepping up from the 60e! Youre on the right track either way! First upgrade id do to a straight line car.

I meant to say some other things as well, my mind has been MIA today...

4l80e is an evolution of the th400. 4l80e has overdrive and a locking converter, th400 doesn't. The th400 will be cheaper to build, but I'd only go that route if it was a weekend car or a track only car.

Both are very strong transmissions when build properly but the 80e will cost almost 2x as much and is heavier so I'd go 400 unless your set on keeping OD.

What mike said is pretty much 100% spot on. The 80 is essentially a th400 with OD and lock up. The 80 isn't much more expensive really, the valve body with a brake is a few bucks more, and a lock up converter will be a few bucks more as well, otherwise the rest is just replacing soft parts and new steels

I have no real preference, the car is only a weekend warrior and sometimes driven to work. Never daily driven. I think the th400 will be a easier route im just worried about the speedo. My budget is around 1000. Not including converter, driveshaft, flexplate, odds and ends, don't care about overdrive but im not against it.

you can put a 40 tooth reluctor wheel on there and a VSS

you can find a working 80e for that price no doubt but I doubt youll come close to a built one. You may be able to find a built 400 with a brake for around that if you look hard.

I would go with the 4L80E since the overdrive will help out on the fuel mileage. Get a stand alone controller.

he won't need a controller he wants RMVB

Yea ive been waiting for one to pop up on Craigslist, anyone have one built before? I can pick up a core and get it built but don't know of the price range I'd be looking at with a brake rmvb and some stronger internals, ive read a stock th400 can take quite a bit of abuse.
