Dont they make lockup kits for the th400? I thought it was an optional kit you could install? I know they used to, maybe it has been discontinued?

Pick a stall based on where your engine makes power.

Slipping trans and all Jeff bunch of us got to National Coney at 2am aand my rear bumper was covered in ATF mist lol

Keep in mind you can over cool a trans as well. Running them too cold is about as bad as running them too hot. 180 degrees is perfect.

Just to throw this out there (in case other non-fourth gens/non-LS/non-race car people decide to read this)...and to elaborate as to what Matt touched on...

You need to know where you make max torque...your optimum stall will be from 0 to 300 RPM under that number.

If you're running a big block 454 that makes max torque at 3000 RPM, you'll want a 2800 stall or so.

So you gotta know where you make power...

Spencer I'm not sure about a lock up kit. Never heard of one being available for a 400.... Guess its research time lol.

As for stall motor man said to run atleast a 4000 stall. He said a bit more wouldn't hurt it but he said he wants to make sure the tranny will stay cool. he doesn't wanna rebuild it a lot

This will also get sprayed a little too if that makes a different. Only on race gas tho so no street sprays.

Spraying it does make a difference, typically you would run a tighter converter with it.

What are you spinning this thing to if you dont mind me asking? I run a 4k converter, but my limiter is 6900 or 7k. Seems like you would about blow right through your power band with a big converter like this on a BBC.

No i dont mind at all i appreciate all the help so far. I will shift right around 7200. Gunna set the light for 7k so by time I react and actually shift it will be a little more.

I will chip it at 7400 to give me a little bit of room to play with. But don't wanna spin it to much higher than that.

I will only spray 150 shot on it right now till I change the cam out but that prolly won't be for awhile.

The higher you spin the motor the more efficient the converter will be 95% of the time. People that think big blocks don't like to rev make me lol

If your spinning the motor to 7200-7400 a 4000 stall converter is on the small side.

Yea hear ya there!! My buddy spins his 632 bbf to 8400 all the time in his mud truck and she holds. But he also does have the best of the best in it.

Yea a 4000 stall would be a minimum motor man said but he would really like to see a 4500 stall in there. 4500 is about all I'm Gunna run in it on streets unless cam gets changed then well spray 300 at it and let it go.

Normal driving that convertor will probably never lock up. You will go through a ton of fuel and shift points will be soft.

In what transmission? A TH400 doesn't have lock up so that would be true. If your talking about a 4L60E you need to fire your tuner.

My blue 95 with a stock ls1 (just headers and cai) and I have a 4,000 stall. Its awsome, and I drive it everyday.

Yup this an th400 which is what worries me about heating up since the convertor will never be locked up.

Its not by far at all Gunna be a dd. just a weekend warrior and something to play with during the week.

I really want/need a 4500 stall guess I'm Gunna have to run it and see what she does. Let's just hope she stays cool enough.
