  • How much is to much stall on the streets???

Well I've made the decision to go back to a turbo 400 t braked this time and was wondering a couple of questions about stall. My motor needs a 4000 stall minimum and just wondering if it will kill my tranny on the streets and what cooler to go with.

I figured some of you racecar guys would know. It might end up being a strip car only if it's not capable of staying cool on the streets.

Also what's a good operating temp for a tranny?

    Thanks in advance.

Go with the biggest cooler you can fit. A 4000 stall converter can live on the street.
When in doubt, Whip it out !

I would say 4000 is fine. Different companies build their converters differently. Some are tighter than others, really depends on the converter. But slap a giant cooler up front and Im sure you will be fine.

^ what he said. I could daily drive my 4000 stall. I honestly think it could be a little looser for an NA car too.

I know a member here who had a 5000+ stall in his T-braked TH400 and he put a lot of miles on the car. A big cooler is key when using a non lock up converter.

I couldn't imagine what it's like to daily drive car with that much stall, but to each their own I know a guy who crossed an intersection on two wheels (4200 stall IIRC) when that light went yellow

Mike(concept) and I are running the same converter, and we can both drive ours daily no problem. Mine typically runs 125-140 for daily driving duty, ive seen 210 once I think, and that was hot lapping the car at lapeer. 6 runs back to back no cool down.

But is the converters different for the LS1 than for a big block? What I mean is that LS1s typically have a lot higher stalls than LT1s... I've never heard LT1 guys running around with 4,000+ stalls.

Thats because the LT1 makes its power sooner and also runs out of steam sooner. The converters are of the same design.

If you think 4000 is loose you've either been in a car with a junk converter or have never been in one period. Just because the number is high shouldn't make you afraid of it

On the trans temp 180 is a very good temperature. Once it starts going over 220 is when you would consider it "hot"

I've never ridden in a car with a 4000 converter so I don't even know how different it is compared to mine... not even really sure what mine is. I think mine is like 3400 to 3600.

I have the B&M SuperCooler and my trans temp never exceeds 200 - most of the time it's down in the 160-180 range.
