Welcome to the Michigan FBody Association website.
The Michigan FBody Association is a centralized website for FBody enthusiasts to discuss what's going on in the Michigan area. MiFbody.com was created to allow for an easy one-stop place to find out what's going on in Michigan as far as FBody events, to find out what clubs are available in your immediate area, and for an easy place to post classifieds for items you want to sell! Our goal was to create a more close-knit community of FBody enthusiasts in the state of Michigan, and to bring Camaro and Firebird enthusiasts alike together for some amazing FBody events!
The most important thing to know about the Michigan FBody Association is that we are NOT a club! The Michigan FBody Association is open to everyone, and is a community. Thus, we will have get togethers, casual cruises, events, and such like that, but this is not an exclusive club and it's 100% free to join this site! So what are you waiting for? Register now!

my converter is a 3800 I believe, it might even be a bit higher, but i'm not sure I remember 100%. Anything over 200 degrees and you will want to take it easy. My trans used to get really hot, like 180-200 after a half hour of driving just normal. I Cut my bumper open saturday and installed my billet grill and I drove around Woodward like an ******* all saturday night and it was sitting around 130 just cruising and got up to 180-190 once after two "rice" races with a S/C+Spray Saleen....
I have a dual core Derale trans cooler that has it's own little (10" I think) dedicated fan. the stacked plate units are better I hear, but mine is the tube style one and seems to work pretty good with some airflow through it
Thanks Matt. Yea I've being sizing up cutting mine open to. There just ain't shit for cooling opens on f bodies.
I think I'm Gunna cut mine open and try to mount my cooler directly in front as possible. Gotta fab up a mount so I can get it a few inches away from the radiator. I actually got a little 10" fan laying around so guess I'm Gunna mount that on there aswell.
You want to go in the radiator first, then out of that into the trans cooler and then back to the trans.
Because the tranny cooler in the radiator is a liquid cooler (is cooled by another liquid) it in theory can do more cooling vs an air cooler, as liquids are denser than gases they transfer heat faster. However, your cooling it with your engine coolant, which means the fluid back to the trans is only as cool as your engine coolant, which as you know is 160-200. This will not suffice for cars with big converters. Running it through an aftermarket cooler further reduces temperature of the tranny fluid, down to a safer level.
Looks like I'm Gunna have to buy a new radiator with one that has a cooler built in.....knew it was Gunna bite me in the ass
Looks like need to do some shopping know. Got a lot to stuff to get now and a big list of to do's.
Now what convertor to get.... Decisions decisions......
Thanks everyone for there comments, it was greatly appreciated.
if you ever have a trans issue they cant be flushed
The other thing. most everybody here run lockup convertors or tight turbo nonlockup. big difference than a no Lockup loose NA convertor,
The way a convertor feels/drives varies. to get a 4000 stall on a low hp engine or small cube the vert will be sloppy. big inch , boost or n20 a 4000stall will drive better than on a lower power car

I wouldn't buy a new radiator just for the built in cooler. I have a griffin radiator, it's not connected to my trans cooler at all. I don't want 185* coolant "cooling" down my trans that already runs at 130-160..... just buy a nice trans cooler.
I thought your radiator already had a trans cooler.
Dont worry about it! Its not necessary by any means. Just an added measure, some choose not to use it at all. But seems like most that have it will use it. Just wanted to make sure you understood not to go cooler then radiator, then your just heating the fluid back up!
As has been mentioned several times, are you going with a lockup converter? That can make quite a difference in temps depending on how and where its driven. If memory serves, the TH400 never came with lockup right?
My dad has a TCI 5500 stall in his car, it feels mild on the street comared to his friend who has a supercharged Marauder with a 3400-3600 and it seemed like he had to wind it way up before it'd move.
