    • That sucks Mike - hopefully the builder will pay for the mistake.

My guess it that it's pretty messed up - might be cheaper to stick another shortblock in it at this point.

The rods have a flat and round side - look at Larry's pic's then look at Mike's.

The rods are offset - and Mike's was put together wrong.

              • the bottom of the rods that little notch on each side? i see how larrys face the front and mikes face each other toward the center of one another. i think the builder should take responsibility for that.

Not the notches - by the rod bolts....one side is round and one is flat. On Larry's they all face the front of the engine - on Mike's.....the pair's face each other.

                  • Unfortunately I don't think he'll take responsibility but who knows.

I personally know his builder and he builds 1500+ hp all the time. But mistakes happen. He's human.

yeah thats what i was referring to. wrong word choice. you really gotta know what your doing cause that is the ever most slightest mistake.

                        • and i want to thank dustin (alwaysmessedup) for coming and picking up my pos and helping with taking it out and finding the issues. much nicer with a lift and the proper tools. thanks to his dad also for allowing the heated space and letting me store it there until this is resolved. good people like this are hard to come by these days. met dustin on here, imagine that. good peeps on here too, lol. thanks everyone.

now to see what happens with the builder. should i try and get some cash back and take it elsewhere or try and let him attempt it again?

                          • when he rebuilt it what did he do? hone? polish crank. you have new pistons right? did it get balanced?
since those are fractured rods they cant really be fixed.
My 382 didnt even have offset rods in it. They are are SBC rods. No offset is probably not as bad as having offset torwards each other.
The way the bore looks it appears he may have honed, balled honed without a torque plate.
CAn you take a pic of the skirt and second ring on the removed piston/s. that will kinda show piston to wall clearance

                            • Unfortunately, things like this happen all too often with old school machinists. There is nothing wrong with the old timers, some of them do really top notch work on the stuff they know....the problem comes when they try to apply that same knowledge on LS motors. That's why I asked who did the work. I was hoping you had taken it to a shop that had lots of experience with LS platforms.

If I were you, I would approach it very professional and keep a cool head. If the guy is ethical, he will offer to fix it for free and eat his cost...that's what should happen. If he doesn't well then unfortunately yoru SOL. Really, it's up to him how this situation goes down...but approaching him with a calm cool head will only help the situation. Now...if he refuses to stand behind his work...then you can go ballistic.....it won't help you in any way other than just to vent. Been there, done that...makes for good stories years later when the sting is gone.

                              • crank was turned and polished, .10 over bearings installed. yes it was balanced. forged mahle pistons on stock rods and cylinders honed. unsure with a plate or not. skirts were wore cause i remember discussing it with dustin. ill get pics in a while. i dont know if i want him to redo the work or just try and get some cash back and figure something else out.

anyone in the GR area that does LS work?
