  • Dear 700R4 i hate you

Hey guys! I haven't posted on here in a long time.

I'm having a bit of a problem with my tranny...well 2nd tranny. The first one leaked fluid out something fierce and so instead of repairing it and worrying about it being over heated and destroyed clutches, i took it out and replaced it. The one that's in the iroc now i was told was a 0 mile rebuilt with a shift kit and higher stall convertor. Ok cool i thought, put the new tranny in with the higher stall and noticed i didn't have 4th. So i thought i had a stuck check ball or something like that. Drove it around in 1-3rd no problems. I was coming down the hill to my drive way when i lost all gears. Just revved, so i coasted it into the garage. Come to find out the pump went out. I think it was due to the stall convertor. so i replaced the pump with the one out of the transmission that came in the car when i got it and also the original torque convertor. And that's where i'm at now. All the shifter linkage is correct and properly adjusted and my TV cable is properly adjusted. I have reverse, have neutral, don't have anything in OD position, have 1st and 2nd in D and have 1st in 1 and 2nd in 2. If i put it in OD and get on it i get a shiver of movement.

Is this newer rebuilt that i got a giant ass paper weight now? I like the 700r4 for the torquey 1st and 2nd, but it pisses me off that i spent the money to get a piece of crap.

So my questions are as follows:
What would cause 1st and 2nd in D but nothing (1-4th) in OD?

Would it be a better bet to switch to a turbo 350? I do like the get up off the line responce of the 700. I do like the reliability of the 350. And i really dont wanna go threw the hassle of swapping out a crossmember for a 350.

Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Did you have the TV cable adjusted properly? If not you could cook the trans. Sounds like the intermediate clutch is not working.

may sound stupid, but double check the fluid, i would drop the pan and make sure there is nothing wrong with the filter or an extra rubber boot around the neck of the filter. Other wise I would drop and it and go through it, might be a missing check ball too. The 700r4 is pretty simple to rebuild just pick up a book.

I would pull it out and replace it with a TH350 and a 3800 converter. Yep, yep, yep............................................... ........that what I would do. Not much help, but just thought id injest some usless opinion, lol. Good luck with the problem. Eric L

id check the fluids. and have you tried shifting it into gear from the trans itself, obviously have the rear jacked up and run it through the gears on the trans. i know its prolly dumb but it will definately rule everything out but the trans. id personally run the gears through the trans itself, then drop the pan make sure everything looks good and clear underneath and throw in new fluids. and make sure everything is plugged in lol

Couldn't get to it yet. Hopefully I'll get at it before I have to go to a wedding tomorrow. Plus my neighbors LOVE to call the 5-0 on me if I do anything that is loud at night. I'll update ASAP.

Ok update time. It was still acting up and doing the same thing. Took the pan off and looked and everything looks fine. Fluid was darker but not burnt or have the burnt smell. So i have no idea whats going on. Im gonna ask the guy i bought the tranny from where he had it rebuilt. Maybe they can give me some more info.
