I agree you need an overdrive gear. It doesn't sound like a race car and most people don't care to drive on the highway at 3300 RPM. For the people who preach about TH350 and Th400s on your next 2-3 hour trip do not use an overdrive gear and I would be curious to hear your honest opnion after.
A 4l60e is another form of a 700R4. In 1993/1994 they started renaming how they clasify transmissions.

IF it were me I wouldn't change tranmissions, if its not broke don't fix it. I learned the hard way, buy what you want in the first place.
IF you have to have a manual I would lean towards the route Curtis is giving you. Your young, I would prefer to see you do something better with your money than spend $2500+ to install a 6 speed. $3,000 will buy you another 3rd gen with manual(but a T5).
If you love the car, hate your money, and plan to keep the car forever get a T56, you won't be disapointed.
