  • Flywheel discussion: 28lb. vs 18lb.

Doing some research for my spring break project here. Now as some of you know, my car's not exactly "stock" any more but I wouldn't call it that heavily modified either...heads are untouched 243's. However, it did generate enough power to get my 9k mile clutch to slip anywhere above 4500rpms leaving me to search for a new clutch setup for the coming year.

Pretty set on a monster level 3 with a tick adjustable master right now, but I'm not sure which flywheel would be best for my application. Yes, reducing drivetrain weight will help it rev quite a bit quicker, but then again I'll have to launch at a higher rpm. I don't really get out to the strip, ever, and I use my car as a part-time daily driver during the summer. Plan on running some 315 street tires on the back for now, adjustable TA and 8.8" rear to come later in the summer (or next year depending on funding).

So what are the pros and cons of each?

Mods: El Torro cam (230/230 .612/.591 111+2), stock 243's, all bolt-ons (soon to have a fast 92/92 setup)

btw I'm gonna be pretty pissed if I can't get it over 400whp

    Used to own a Firebird.

I run cam only with a lightened flywheel in my vette. I have a McLeod RST street twin and the McLeod 12lb i believe flywheel. Overall I definitely saved some weight in the driveline with the swap. Car made 407/367. Some changes I noticed was I do get a little chatter now on the street where as I am about positive I wouldn't get if I had used a heavier flywheel. It's not bad and is about gone now but barely there still once n a while. Also the car is a pig to launch at the strip, lol. It was hard to keep the RPMs up after launch as it simply wants to bog. I just added some gears to help out a bit more there. I do like how it revs and use the car on the road course as well so I'm sure it's benefits are there but honestly I really have yet to find an instance where I say or have said, "Damn, that lighter flywheel really made xxxx much better." Catch my drift.... If I had to do it over again, probably wouldn't go lighter or maybe just a little lighter especially if you were plan on launching the car. Hope this helps!

With as much street duty as your car see's a heavier flywheel would be a better application. Light wheels can become a real pita on the street from all the reading I have done. However...disclaimer.....I have never had a light wheel so take it for what's it's worth..lol

I have and agree with you. Def have some chatter I wouldn't otherwise have and really haven't noticed anything "positive" from being lighter.

First pass is just a stupid amount of slip. Second pass is more of a dump (note how quickly those RPMs fall when the car leaves)

I have an aluminum lightweight flywheel.....i hate it. Ill be replacing it with an iron unit in the spring.

Its not bad if you rev the hell out of your car to take off, but that gets annoying real fast.

I want to replace my stock one with something lighter, but only a little lighter....the 12 pounders some people run are way too light imo.

edit: damn jonny, if i launched like you did id be breaking stuff like crazy!
