Check the rear axle u-bolts. My Sonoma would "clunk" when it shifted, turned out the u-bolts on the rear axle were loose, and became so rusted that they had to be replaced. Check those first, and while you're under the car, take a look at all the u-joints as well.

I'd check your blinker fluid and muffler bearings. Probably a good start...... lol

x2 on the tranny mount but also torque arm bushing will wear down and cause this I had the problem aswell. Torque arm bushing is relatively cheap

Check your trailing arms bolts on your rear axle. Right after my rear end swap mine was clunking in first gear and less noticeably once in motion. I tightened up mine like 1-2 turns and it made a world of difference. Good luck.

Should be a one-piece steel shaft. 2-piece was only on V6 cars, AFAIK.

tranny mount is shot, would that also cause a clunk as I am coming to a stop??? Also, is it common to have a rear main seal go bad in the lt1? at 68000? Have you ever heard of tri- seal to mend minor leaks?

Did you check the trailing arm bolts. I also had a clunking when I stopped. Be sure to torque them well, even the small amount of play I had caused havoc.

Lower control arm.
also, suspension bolts should be torqued at curb height

See the 2 bars perpendicular to the axle in this pic. There are two bolts, one that bolts to the rear axle and one to the body. If either is even slightly loose you will get lots of knocking and jerking. It can be hard to see, but if you get on the ground and look from the back end and have a buddy bounce up and down on the decklid you can see it.
