  • 9inch build-up for IROC

Figured that I would post up a build thread on the 9inch rear that I picked up late last year. I found this rear on Craigslist here in Grand Rapids. I was shocked to even come across something like this here in GR so I figured I'd go take a look at it. After a couple measurements I verified it was the right width for a third gen Ended up buying it for $1500 figuring I got a decent deal. It had a 3.73 gear with an "unknown" posi unit and it was set up for Ford explorer 11" disks. He claimed it was dead quiet going down the road. I figured all I would have to do was get rid of that nasty red powdercoat, weld some relocation brackets on, paint it and I'd be ready to go.......oh how I was wrong.

Here is how it looked when I brought it home.

I promptly tore it down to inspect it only to find this....a bunch of pitted gears!

After talking with some people, some said it could be a quiet gearset or it could howl like a banshee with those pitted gears...so I ordered up a complete rebuild kit and a set of Motive 4.11's.

So I did a complete tear down all the way through the posi...which turned out to be the standard Ford Traction Loc unit. Not a bad piece by any means, just not what I would have chosen if I were building one from scratch. The friction plates were like brand new so I did not replace them, howver the diff cross pins were about shot so I bought new pins and preload springs.

    Tear down pic.

I decided to turn my attention to getting rid of the powdercoat and get ready to paint.

After hours of grinding I ended up getting about 90% of it off. The remaining coating I just scuffed for paint.

    More to come

        In my 10bolt? 3.42's.

Before I painted the rear I welded in a bung so I could add a fill plug. Also drilled and tapped the bottom of the housing for a drain plug. I ordered the relocation brackets from Spohn and welded them on too. While I was at it I went around the housing and welded up some other areas that didn't have weld on them just for a little extra insurance...and because I always look for excuses to weld

Here is the fill and drain plugs.

        Relocation brackets

some extra welding for good measure

Ya..no kiddin....I'm glad I at least got to enjoy my car a little when the weather got nice, however, right now it's killing me.

Yum....fresh paint. I ended up using a 2K black sealer and then clear coated over that. I'm digging this new paint gun!

            So shiny

A few people have seen it with the fresh paint and said they thought it was powdercoated..lol

Ha that’s funny. Maybe if you didn’t do such a dam good job with that paint gun….some people might have thought otherwise. You get that heavy beast in the car let? Let me know if ya need a hand steadying it in there.
