I FINALLY had a chance to check this this weekend, ring & pinion gears are shot. I can turn the drivshaft ~ 1/8th of a turn before the pinion engages the ring. Thats how much slop there is, when it gets put in gear it clunks and again when it shifts.
Guess im out for a set of gears? Should last me through next year right? If I can spend 200 and make it work for another year, ill be happy with that. I dont have the cash for a 12 bolt.
These look right?

If you gotta buy some gears step it up a little and get a 3:73!Originally posted by sman View PostI FINALLY had a chance to check this this weekend, ring & pinion gears are shot. I was also looking at some threads on ls1tech, apparently there is a fair amount of slop in the center section, just a 10 bolt thing.
Hears the deal though, I went out to the back barn and dug my old open dif 3.08 10 bolt out. Started messing with it and it has ZERO slop from the input/pinion shaft. If I turn the shaft a millimeter the axles turn.
So what gives? And where is everyone this morning?1999 Camaro - 6 liters of fury.....

If there was enough slop in the ring and pinion itself for you to turn the driveshaft 1/4 turn before they touched in either direction the 1st time you launched the car or got a good 2-1 downshift at WOT it would shatter everything inside of their.
You said you can turn it only an 1/8th of a turn? That seems 100% normal to me. I would be more worried if it didn't have any play at all. I would think it was binding up.

There is no slop in the original 89xxx mile rear end out of my car. Not saying its right either, just trying to figure this out.
This rear did come from an m6 car, only had 30k on it when I bought it, but I dont remember it being like this.
Isnt the part that normally goes bad in these the ring and pinion though? I understand what your saying about that much slop and it not exploding all over the place, I dont understand it either. But I dont remember all these clunks and noises I hear before I went to the track though.Last edited by sman; October 19th, 2009, 11:08 AM.1999 Camaro - 6 liters of fury.....

As its my only mode of transportation until this weekend, no. Thats the plan for saturday morning. As of friday the insurance turns back on on my intrepid and that will take DD status. At that point I will probably turn the insurance off on the camaro as I just dont think whatevers wrong with it is going to be quick or easy.1999 Camaro - 6 liters of fury.....

To tell you the truth I doubt something is wrong with it to were its going to break. I think its all in your head. We have guys on this site that have been VERY hard on ten bolts on the street and at the track on stickys and haven't had a problem. I would say that 85% of the 10 bolts you hear about breaking are stick cars and the other 15% are very high HP auto cars.

I just got done with engine pull and replace. As I remember the rear when the drive shaft was off I had emergency brake on an at best the was very slight play. If you want to break it to a measurement I would say 1/16 or 1/32 of a turn, very little but some play.
When you check it again put on e brake it locks the axles, so you will feel the play in the center section and ring and pinion. Just a suggesion.sigpic
