help!

something in my rear end is clunking pretty loud when turning all the way left, no matter what speed every tire rotation i get a loud clunk that kinda even shakes the car. the clunk is coming from the rear right tire area..

that piece with the arrow going to it moves IN and OUT about 1/8th to a quarter of an inch..

I was told on ls1tech to remove the rear end cover and look for loose metal.. I did that and got this..

now when pulling on the studs of the rear driver tire, with the cover off i can see movement in the rear end where the arrows point in this picture, if i look in that hole while someone is pushing and pulling the stud/axle shaft thing i can see it movin

I was told on ls1tech i most likely either need new bearings and seals or an entire new differential..

-Now in the previous picture where its circled, i removed that cover to the bearing..

I'm not to familiar with these rear ends so im kinda stuck on what to do now to finish removing the axle shaft, do i need to remove the spider gears then remove the c clip or?? any help is appreciated!

and is their a certain brand of fluid i should use?? whats the proper fluid to use??

ok so i removed the c clip, pulled the axle shaft out.. and everything was good.. but then i noticed this..

i don't think this is normal.. i think this is where the metal shards came from

those holes aren't supposed to be showing are they?? up close it looks as if the inside gear knocked a hole through.. i circled it with red..

so im thinking i need a new differential?? anyone?

It's really hard to see in your pics what's wrong

Good news is I have a diff.
Bad news is your a ways from me

You got your axles out so I take it you pulled the pin in the center of the diff. and pushed in your axles in and removed the clips, good.

With that amount of metal in your rear you need new gears at least.
New diff. bearings would be good also.

If you can get some better quality pics I might be able to help ya out a bit more.

how much do you want for the differential? would it work with my car seeing how i have 2.73's.. (lol) im almost positive thats the problem, but i'll get some better pictures up tomorrow.

I will be at the meet and greet so I could grab it there, if your goin of course haha

any other things i should know or look for or test??

Not really sure whats wrong, pictures just arent good enough. I however live a bit closer. Not at all trying to steal away from kyle, hes a genius and is a good guy. But I have a rear end out of my car, 3.08's, open diff. Needs a pinion seal. Other than that, should be good.

But you may not even need a new one. See if you can get some better pictures so we can see whats going on inside there. Axels shouldnt be moving in an out.

well after i had the axle shaft out i found out the movement was from the C clip.. the c clip fit in the spot on the end of the axle and there was about 1/8th or so of an inch movement.. il try and get some better pictures tomorrow.. how much would you want for that though?

I got a question, the ABS and traction control don't work on my car, no idea why, but the lights are on in my dash.. so can i just pick up any ole 10 bolt rear end? do i need to look for certain one?

also all the rear end fluid that drained out, it has metal shards in it that you can't really pick up but theres so much of it...

i found a 3.08 rearend at a junkyard too.. just tryin to keep my options open.. aren't 3.08's out of v6's? he said it was open differential.. im a bit confused.. is open posi? will the 3.08 rear end make me leave 1 liner black marks lol??

No, an open Carrier is not posi.

A posi rear has spider gears with the springs and what not.

As far as the 3.08 I'm not sure if that is a V6 rear or not?
I do believe it's a step down for a carrier though as far as gear sizes go.

If you are not worried about TC or ABS you can put any series rear in your car and it will work.
I don't even have my ABS any more, never did work

a step down? I currently have 2.73's.. and the guy at the body shop said mines open differential.. the guy i bought my car from said it has a rebuilt rear end with 2.73's.. but he didn't say what else..

when i jack up my car and spin 1 wheel the other one spins with it.. so do i have open differential? i leave 2 black marks all day long..

so am i fine with buying this 3.08 complete rear end or should i do something else?? im completely confused on what i should do.. i just don't want to end up spending over 500$ rebuilding mine.. but this junkyard wants 200$ for this entire rear end which is a 3.08 gears and open differential..

i can't really get any better pictures though.. everything that you can see, looks good.. it's inside the differential which is bad as far as i could tell. i just don't want to continue taking anymore apart without knowing what im doing..
