  • rear main seal..How difficult??

since the tranny is out of the car, ive decided maybe i should replace the rear main seal as it has been leaving a couple drops of oil here and there. checked the oil and tranny pan, but no leak and the valve covers are clean too. anyone do this before? and ive read about a new updated version of the old seal, anyone have a part number? Thanks. oh yeah and no news on my trans yet.

i did mine while it was out, simple as pie, takes like 5minutes if the trans is out... just be sure to re torque the flywheel, i also used locktite just because i was paranoid.

its pretty straight forward, ive seen some people damage the rear cover because they removed the old seal incorrectly

well yesterday during our travels i noticed my car was leaving a trail of smoke. ecspecially when i would get on it. not to mention, i sprayed oil all over the pretty gold camaro all the way back to grand rapids. get home, get the car in the air and the whole bottom of my car is soaked in oil. after wiping everything down, i cant seem to find the source but im sure its the rear main seal. just sucks because i have to pull the tranny again and the car will be down for a few days.

ugh, wish I woulda thought when I had my tranny worked on about a year ago, my car drips a couple drops of oil from the rear main seal here and there and could have had a new one of those on while my tranny was apart.

from what I can tell the felpro rear main seal is the same one as the gm replacement.
I have had them next to each other and the numbers/markings match

well today i removed the trans and flywheel and tried for a second to get the seal out and finally figured it would just be easier to take the whole cover off. the seal didnt seem messed up and dint see as much oil as expected. its the only thing that it can be becuase everything above is dry. ill change these parts, do an oil change and put it back together. the whole underside of my car is soaked in oil, from the trans back. heres a pic of the rear of the motor, before i took the cover off.
