  • Mobile 1 foaming?

Hey guys, I broke in the new motor last year using Valvoline VR-1 Racing SAE-60 oil. After the break in process I figured I would help keep the parts going longer by switching over to a full synthetic. So I changed it all over to Mobile 1 Extended Performance 15w-50, now it seems to foam up like crazy!

I use a Melling high volume high pressure oil pump and I had an issue with foaming before on the old motor using the same VR-1.
So I tossed in a different oil pan with a new baffle setup and I haden't had the problem on the new motor/pan with the same oil untill I switched to the synthetic.

Any one else have this problem with Mobile 1 or any suggestions of what type of synthetic I should go to? I'm thinking I might try royal purple but don't want to waste the money if it will foam up aswell. Give me some pointers.

No its at the same level, the oil pressure seems to stay steady but after a bit of high reving fun I pull the dipstick and every time its covered in bubbles.

I wasn't sure if the oil weight differance would effect it so I went with the heaviest I could get at the time.

Not good...try running a quart of Lucas along with the Mobil...

Almost sounds like a gasket leak?

I went back to the VR-1 for now and its fine. I don't get it. Next syn I can find in the same weight is AMSOIL,Redline, and Royal Purple. The VR-1 is an anti-foaming oil.

AMSOIL and Redline are 11 bucks a quart for syn 60w and I cant find royal purple in quart size 60w. Not sure if upping the weight would even help.
Seems for all of them to get a decent price you have to buy a 5 gallon jug for around $200.

Is there any other Syn on the market with that weight or another synthetic designed for anti-foaming?

with a hi pressure high volume pump you shouldn't need anywhere near that viscosity unless your bearing clearances are HUGE

You have something wrong with the motor. Any cross contaimination in the oil/coolant?

No contamination, I checked it for air/coolant leaks. It only seems to do it under the high reving situations.

Beyond that normal driving I would check it and found no foaming that I could tell it kept under 5,500 rpm "normal driving range". Once I want to play though 5,500-7,200 rpm is when it happens. Being it is a high volume/high pressure I had issues with fluxuating oil pressure at first with the old oil pan seem to suck up and not make it back to the bottom in an ordly fashion. With the new oil pan on with the same brand pump and using the same oil seemed to be alright, so I thought it was fixed.

Could still be an issue with the pump/pan combo but being as it only happened with the sythetic I wasn't sure. I have used other weights of the VR-1 oil and they all worked alright, I just liked the consistant oil pressure the 60w gave me.

if anything, lucas has been known to be a cause of foaming. might be worth a shot though.

why so damn thick on the oil?

your getting air trapped it the oil , might be cause the oil is too thick. dont add lucas that stuff makes it even worse

wow i didnt even see you were using 60w... thats too thick man. Thicker oil doesnt really help oil pressure in a good way. Its just more resistance giving your sensor a false reading. Thicker oil doesnt get into all the crevices as well as a thinner oil does. Id step it down to at least a 50w if not 40w. 40 is considered to be optimal in gen II and gen III engines

ill be running 5w30 still in mine, me and my buddy have the same oil pump he has 60psi of oil pressure at idle

tho this is a sbc i dont see what the need for the thick oil, you can get the mobile 1 diesel 5w40 too, ive ran that and it actually made my oil pressure drop

I run mobil 1 diesel 5w40 when I plan on spraying.
how much pressure do you have at idle full temp?WOT?
too much oil pressure will wash a bearing.
what is your pickup to pan clearance?
