Yeah the seperate sides thing is just an old myth. As long as you have half decent wiring, you should be alright, and yes, standard copper wire from radioshack will do just fine.

running a power wire

For a sub amp I'll run RCA's down the same side as the power wire. With my 4-channel I ran both down separate sides since I ran speaker wire to the speakers separately anyway (was a Bose system).
