  • How to power an amp off a 110v outlet?

My neighbor wants to run a car stereo in his new snowmobile trailer.
It has a built in generator and distribution box, is there any kind of converter to take that 110v down to 12-14v safely?

A little bigger. He just wants to run a stereo with 4 speakers, no amp and subwoofers? 10 amps would work well.

A good Linear power supply is what you need.

13.8Vdc regulated, but you'll need more than 10 amps if you want to crank it up. The musical peaks will draw more than 10 amps. A 30 amp would be much better, but they are $$$.

Why not garage sale for a cheap home stereo?

"Depends on the radio" would be a better answer. Nice deck 22x4 RMS - 15 amp, 30 is overkill unless you want to run other 12v items. Cheap deck 10x4 RMS? - 10 amp.

Instead of spending 50-100 on a power supply and X amount on a deck and speakers, shop craigslist for a decent home system like Tricky said.

He's looking to use a car one for the space.

Do they make 15 amp ones?

They are all over ebay. Just search for 13.8v regulated DC powersupply XX amps, or variations of it.

13.8 is VERY common for HAM radio and CCTV cameras.

For the price, this should work fine just for a radio...unless he likes 100% volume.

Yup, that is the exact unit I have for testing/repairing amps and radios. It also powers a radio in my garage for when im wrenching, and does just fine.
I mis-understood...I kept thinking he wanted to power an external amp.
