So I am trying to finish up my sub box and I have been playing with the calculators online. What better, a higher tuning frequency or a lower one. Also my box has a volume between 1.5 and 1.9 Cu in. What size port would you recommend. BTW the material I used is 3/4 MDF. Thanks in advance.

All depends on the subwoofer you're using.
Usually they'll tell you the optimal sizes/volumes. I know JL Audio tells you the exact size/dimensions for a sealed box, and then all the dimensions necessary for a ported box (including port location, dimensions, etc).Gone but not forgotten: 1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z

My subs are 400 watt RMS / 800 watt max Audiobahn Flame baskets.
I guess I just don't understand the relationship with tuning frequency and the audio quality. My box is way small for my subs. Im just trying to figure out how big I should make the port(s) to compensate.
Edit: Looks like this might be the answer I was looking for...Last edited by phoenix_rising; March 1st, 2010, 11:07 PM.

I'd just shoot Audiobahn an email, or give them a call - I'm sure they'd be able to help you figure it out.Originally posted by phoenix_rising View PostMy subs are 400 watt RMS / 800 watt max Audiobahn Flame baskets.

Like Kyle said depends on sub... But I personally think sealed boxes sound the best. Why going ported?sigpic

I agree there. I wouldn't consider porting a box a work-around to having too small of a sub box.Originally posted by Darrenscamaro View PostLike Kyle said depends on sub... But I personally think sealed boxes sound the best. Why going ported?

Unlikely...especially with 3/4" MDF. I mean, 400W RMS ain't a ton...Originally posted by phoenix_rising View PostI was told that with the power these subs are pushing that they will damage the box.

Yeah no if your not set on a ported box then build a sealed box to spec for the sub. I had 2 12 inch Kicker CVR's pushing about double your one sub hooked up to a 1800 watt D class amp in my camaro in a sealed box... I built the box myself and it didnt damage it at all. Now I on the other hand damaged it quite a lot but the subs did not lolsigpic

Is there any advantages of having it ported cause I'm in about the same boat.... Got a sealed box and two 12"800 watt B.A.S.S subs by acoustic audio running off a 2000 watt amp.....They kick but I was wondering if porting it would help. Don't know what they sound like in my firebird yet but in my 4 banger's trunk they aren't bad. Just seems like there is a lot of pressure in the box for the subs to move. Really don't have much experience with subs SO??????sigpic

You'd be better off building the box to enclosure specs...porting it will make it louder, but sound less crisp and clean.Originally posted by 94punisher View PostIs there any advantages of having it ported cause I'm in about the same boat.... 057 - Copy.JPGWas gonna build it last weekend. Was doing a whole bunch of looking at builds on here and whatever plans I could find. Looked at buying one too and and the prices
pushed on my search. Then did some craiglisting $20 and a small trip I think it was worth it. Whole system build for $80....... Just didn't know if it made a real difference. I'll probably run it as is first see how it sounds in the bird then if I don't like it, port it and if I don't like that seal it back up.
