The only reason I want an alarm like the one Ben wants is because I am missing one of the lock cylinders for my tops. Half of the locks on the car don't even work! lol I need to have them replaced like NOW! Thanks.

best security system brand is excalibur, but the best system is one that a thief can't disable easy. I won't touch a viper system (I stole an armed one off the viper show van a few years ago to prove a point to them) get a pain inducing siren for teh interior, and don't tell anyone where any part is hidden

Excalibur, huh? How much does one of those systems cost? Can the installers also install power door locks on my ride?

the last one I sold was around $200 installed (top line with all the gadgets like proximity sensors) power locks are easy since there are a million and one kits for it out there. Hopefully in the next week or so I'll have my store expanded, right now am waiting on a new credit card (mine got stolen)

Sucks about your credit card getting stolen, Steve. I love my asian wolf alarm system, works great for me.

So, how much would a simple remote keyless entry/ starter kill alarm, maybe with proximity sensors cost? How about a power door lock kit?

a decent alarm with remote start will run around $100 before install, the sensors are around $10. Power lock kits run around $100 also

Alright. Is the excalibur with the proximity sensors and power door lock kit difficult to install? Could I do it myself? I've installed a crapload of car stereos and amps, do you think I could finish this project in a weekend?

When my dad and i bought my asian wolfe alarm, it took us two days with only a few hours work each day (it was the middle of winter during a really cold spell) to install the alarm. You'd definitely need to have a multimeter handy, and a good wiring diagram for the Camaro's wiring schematics.

I already have a pretty decent alarm installed by the previous owner, but he didn't give me the remote, so it is not functional. Could I possibly buy just the remote and whatever determines the frequency at which the system operates and just replace the old one? I don't know exactly what brand it is, but it has a siren that has been disconnected, it is equipped with a starter kill switch, and it has the red LED mounted in the dash. Any suggestions?

I'd say try that route, it's the cheapest and would be the easiest. If you get that working and then find out you want to upgrade, then you can. Having an alarm already installed, you'll be able to use most of the connections that the previous alarm has since they're all going to use the same idea... wires to unlock/lock the doors, wires to monitor the courtesy dome lamp, etc..

I've got both of my cars original matching remotes. If you can make them work with your current system and want them, you can have them free. I switched to an audiovox system with remote start, 2-way pager, half mile range, motion sensors, proximity sensors, and a cellular uplink with location tracking and door lock/unlock. It's got 7 channels, so I also wired one of the optional buttons to the start-up/shut-down for my car computer and indash display. I got this installed at Civic Audio (45608 VanDyke, Utica, MI 48317) for about $500-$600. My brother got the same alarm for his car there without the cellular uplink and proximity sensor for probably just over $200.

and if you install it yourself never trust the wirediagram the company gives you with the kit...lol i tossed a remote start/alarm combo on my car just a cheep 150 dollar design tech one.. but when i wired it the same as the book ya the remote start activated my rear defrosters...lol the lock unlock rolled my windows up and down and the alarm did nothing... i was in a rush and should have known better but i just went right to there website for model specific wiring not just the generic GM wiring they give you... along with a chiltons to make sure they were right... its kinda a mess but if you can read a wiring diagram and trust tapping into that then save yourself a few bucks and install it yourself... just dont go cheep with electric tape..solder and shrink wrap it...

if you can find the brain you can buy a remote, the other parts you described are standard alarm stuff

I know where the brain is, and I will probably remove it and check on a manufacturer later on this week. I will need a new siren too, the old one was totally removed, it appears. Thanks!
