  • Aftermarket seat installation

I haven't got them yet but I'm looking at the summit sport seats. I've heard installation is easy and I've heard it's a nightmare. So if anyone could fill me in I would appreciate it. So, do I need the slider brackets to install? Or should I just get the kit that has a bunch of "installation equipment"

I bought the slider brackets for the aftermarket seats I put in my el camino and everything bolted right in. I would suggest them

Wow did you send this at the right time. I am in the thick of it!! I purchased a pretty nice set of seats that I am really excited to get into the car... then it got hard. The brackets that fit them to our car was discontinued. Now I am fabricating... No worries. I can do that, however. Measuring our floorboards and fitting my 6 1/2 foot tall self has been tough. Actually, I am kinda glad at this point, because now, I designed the brackets to fit me. PERFECT.

It has been hard, but worth it. The biggest thing is being able to mount whatever seat you buy to the four bolts on the floor of your car. You need the right bracket (adapter to fit the bolts). Many seat manufacturers still have adapters. They aren't universal, they have to be your model generation car. Like 3rd gen. Sometime you will find 3rd and 4th gen. Or you have to make them. Making them is obviously harder. I laser cut and bent 5/16 steel. Then welded it. You have to make sure the seat is centered on the wheel, the right height to use the wheel and not hit your head on the roof, and be strong enough to keep you planted in a collision.

Some aftermarket seats do have them. Like Procar. Or you can buy the really expensive ones like planted.com. Or make them yourself. The other option is to go with a seat you already know fits your car like other 4th gen or 3rd gen seats. Some have had luck with vette seats.

I am mounting these right now. I am finishing the passenger side welding at work tomorrow (buddy welds not me so well). I will have them powder coated and then I can take some pics showing it. Let me know if you have any questions about how I am doing it. I spent some cash on these seats because I really liked their look. Now I need to get them mounted well.

I forgot to answer specifically about the slider. I think there was another around here that decided not to use the aftermarket slider and keep his original. You will definitely ruin your original seat if you remove them, but you can. Then make a flat adapter plate (no welding) just make an adapter between. That person had a problem because it made the new seats sit over an inch higher. That might now be a problem depending on your height, but defiantly not an option for me. This allows you to have the GM designed mount and sliders just the new seats on top.

I would say in most cases you will need the aftermarket sliders. Then get the brackets that fit your car. Or you will need to do the aftermarket bracket companies.

Planted.com (pretty expensive at about $150 per side)
wedgeengineering.com (they seem to be getting out of the business)

Ill probably end up getting the bracket. The seats are most likely going to be procar. Since the seem to be identical to the summit ones but with some advertising( which I wanted) I'm only 5'9 so adding an inch won't effect how I fit in the car.

This kit looks to be my best bet?

Those brackets will mount the seats high, my head would stick through the t-tops. If you want to make custom brackets youre welcome to come take a look at mine.

From what i've heard about those seats on boards around the web is that they're all-in-all pretty good for the price! However, the tracks sitting high is a recurring thing. Keep us posted!
