  • Cleaning Up The Engine Bay On A Third Gen - NEED PICS!

So, the under hood on my Iroc leaves a bit to be desired. It's got a carbed 350 (i need to get pictures and will put them up) and is pretty ugly IMO to be honest.

I need some pointers and pictures of your dressed up engine bays on your car.

    Here's what i'm considering doing
    - AC Delete (thanks Rob for the pointer - didn't know those block-offs existed)
    - New plug wires - the yellow accell ones match nothing
    - New alternator - the $90 chrome summit racing special should be fine.
    - New water neck - mine is pitted and nasty
    - Replace washer fluid bottle and coolant overflow. Do i really need these?

    Thanks party people

I should have pictures soon, but get a AC delete box, not the plate, this way you still can have heat and defrost, unless you want to eliminate all of that too. Purchase a engine dress up kit (valve covers, air cleaner, timing chain cover, etc) and eliminate anything you dont need/want. I got rid of cruise control, AC, SMOG, Charcoal Canister, any other BS I could find, less is more!

I'd like to keep heat so I'll for sure go with the box. I've got the chrome air cleaner, valve covers, and all that jazz..

Am I able to get rid of the coolant overflow bottle? Not sure if that's really needed.

I wouldnt get rid of it, but you can get some better looking ones if your that interested. Get a picture of your current bay and we can be able to help better. If you delete AC and SMOG you can do the Alternator relocation that is pretty slick, I'll find a picture of that.

                  Had to do it.

To not be 100% troll, I think the biggest thing will be wire management. Like the pic that Darren posted of the red engine bay - the engine looks good, but I see that bundle of wires in the top left corner of the bay and it looks like a rats nest. Personal preference, but I've never liked the colored wire looms or hoses, just stick with black which goes well with the red car anyway.

I agree, and to defend that engine bay really quick ( I know you werent picking on it) but that was still a work in progress, he has since finished it and cleaned up all the wires, but that was the only picture I had on my phone showing the alternator relocation that he did.

We're off to a good start. PO used Red loom. I'm not a fan of it. Here's some pics. Its pretty dirty.

                        What I see

                        1. For sure do AC delete it will get rid of a lot of that crap and make that portion of the bay so much cleaner.
                        2. Get those front brackets off the motor and have them painted or powder coated
                        3. Same with your alternator and pulley's
                        4. Get a new coolant bottle (white) or one of the newest fancy stainless ones.

Other then that I would re route any of the wires/hoses and lines that you can to a more discrete location and either clean/paint or replace some of the dull things. (Like the wiper motor sticks out to me)

EDIT: Rip that intake off and have it powdered!

Thanks for the ideas! Keep them coming!

I was going to put in a proform alternator with a polished bracket. Pulleys may be a next year project. Over the winter I'd like to put a bigger cam in the car and a pete jackson noisy gear drive setup.

I like stainless steel brake lines. Inline tube should be able to get you the whole kit for a pretty reasonable price.

That alternator setup that Darren posted is for the newer style brackets, but I would NOT do it that way
