Some advice about rattle-can paint vs spray gun...

I'm in the process of priming my new fenders and I was curious if rattle can primer works as well as spraying it from an actual paint gun. I personally like the spray gun because its easier and less time consuming but I do not have luxury of owing a paint booth, gun, etc... I've put one coat of primer on one fender and was just wondering. I'm sure it will all work the same as long as scotch pad it and clean it off with wax/grease remover before paint.
Also I'm not sure if it would be worth it to wet-sand the primer to get rid of the orange-peel appearance on the fenders, but the rest of the car doesn't seem to have been wet sanded before painted. Would it throw off the finished product and make it obvious that it has been replaced?? Just needed a little advice before I get ahead of myself. Thanks to all who reply!

Rattle can isn't as durable nor as thick. Do it right buy a nce gun and a nice quality paint (diamont, ppg, global etc) hopefully you sand down the orangepeel befor you prime, you never want to spray anything over shiny paint.

Why are you priming? Primer usually is used to top coat some mud work that has been done to fill in pinholes and scratches.

i think its new fenders like he said so its not shiny paint, its a black primer probly but should be sanded anyway to start.

rattle can is ok for small spots just to cover up bare metal and bondo for a short time. There are different types of primers so do a little research, talk to some guys at finish master or any automotive paint supply place, I personally like Wiltes' in waterford family owned very nice people and have everything you need. Trust me you dont need a paint booth to have a great paint job. For my primer gun I use a cheap HVLP gun from local parts place or Harbor Frieght. Keep it clean and lubed and it will work just fine.

If they are new fenders you shouldn't have to prime them. Sand them with 600 grit, use sealer, base, clear.

Make sure if you lube your gun that its the proper spray gun lube I new a painter that just couldn't figure out why he had fish eyes so Damn bad Hahahaha .

Not being a dick but may I ask your reasoning?

If he primes it and doesn't block it properly he with either have sandscratches and cause possible shrinkage or have a wavy panel. New fenders are going to come in the package with a decent E-coat or light primer already on it. Youre just giving yourself more work for no positive outcome.

true, depending on the fender quality yes he could scuff, seal, color and clear. I guess Im just use to getting body parts that are not always straight or perfect.

Thanks to all who replied! They were brand new, I believe anyway (haven't bought or seen brand new body panels) but they had some black sealer looking topcoat. They don't have any dings or anything so I'm assuming they are the real deal. They were donated so I'm not complaining. I just scuffed up the top layer of sealer or whatever it was on it and hit it with a coat or two of primer/sealer. I just thought it would be better to be safe than sorry. I'm thinking of wet-sanding with 800 grit when I have a couple coats of primer to make it nice and smooth. The only automotive background I have is with my father, and an auto-collision class at my school. I loved every minute of it there so I made sure I payed attention. But at the class we never got to work with anything brand new, body panel wise. So my plan is couple coats of primer, wet-sand until smooth, get my previous fender paint matched because the car has been repainted by the previous owner/shop of his choice, then either have someone spray it for me (although I'm interested in making Automotive business my career of choice because I love everything about it), then obviously some clear that will also be wet sanded till smooth. I'm not sure about what exactly to do with the clear because I have not had much experience with clear at my auto class and my father never had any time to show me some things about it. He doesn't have any nice toys anymore lol. All further advice is still greatly appreciated, thanks again.

nice I would just wet sand with 600, but thats just me and how I painted all of my stuff and what I was taught, I been out of school for 10 yrs so things Im sure have changed
